conflicting advice on 2nd ball break

I have been making some progress taking for granted that I should solidly hit the 2nd ball. I was recently advised that it is preferable to hit between the balls eg 1st & 2nd or 2nd & 3rd. The advice was casual & from an unknown source, so I would appreciate some confirmation from A-Zers upon whom I have come to rely with confidence. Thank you.

FOR BREAKING AN 8 BALL RACK (8 ON THE BREAK IS A WINNER)

1. Hit the 2nd ball with a quarter tip of draw with a fast speed stroke as full in the face as you can, avoiding the corner pocket scratch.

2. DO NOT USE SIDE SPIN. Unless you have poor alignment or crooked stroke. If you have either of these you should work on correcting them but I have used side spin (in the past) to break nine ball racks with and it helped my break but that was years ago and while I am still a little wild I'm not crazy. If the side spin helps you hit the object ball more solidly (square) then have at it but for the most part side spin will only reduce your accuracy in hitting the 2nd ball fully.

I still stand by original statement of using the break that you are most confident using.

My comment didn't argue against that, and I agree with it - except I'd say use the break you're most confident using and practice getting more confident with the "right" break.

Well... this thread should have cleared up any confusion you were experiencing. .... or not. ;) Hit the 2nd ball full but with draw and with a little of either right or left english or not.

Yes, the consensus on this forum gives me great confidence. I should never have let a stranger shake my confidence in the Charley Bond book. As always, I appreciate your sage & generous advice.

nice experience from reading a table this week

I came upon a rural pool hall with a table which had such a clear trail of wear from someone doing the 2nd ball break from the left rail (my usual choice) that it looked as if it was painted on. After doing some drills, I decided to practice my rhythm by playing some racks & followed the 2nd ball "trail" religiously.

The results were most gratifying as my potting percentage on the break increased dramatically. In following the "trail" I found that I was forced to place the CB closer to the rail than I usually do.

I was so pleased to find that, when I consistently incorporated this modification of my technique on several different tables, I maintained my increased success rate on the break.
