Confusing to me... Help?

Watching this video, what is the objective of 3 cushion and what are the rules? How do you play?

Marissa,

Watching the start of the video, I can see how one might be confused.

Briefly, the shooter's cue ball must strike the other two balls and, before contacting the second ball, the cue ball must contact the cushions at least three times.

In the first shot of that video Blomdahl attempts a shot in which his cue ball hits the cushions three times before striking the first ball. He did that well, but failed to get to the second ball, so his shot was a miss.

On Reyes first shot he played what we call a "ticky". His cue ball struck the end cushion, then the red ball, then the end cushion again (it's perfectly legal to strike the same cushion more than once and it counts as more than one cushion), then the cue ball hit the long cushion before contacting Blomdahl's cue ball. So Reyes scored one point and got to shoot again.

Reyes then shot a five rail natural, scored another point, and stayed at the table.

On his third shot reyes tried a "cross-table", hitting the long cushions three or more times before contacting the second object ball. He got the cushions, but didn't hit the second ball.

On Blomdahl's second attempt he tried a "smash-through". What he wanted to do is hit the white ball with maximum follow, hit the short cushion, hit the short cushion again, then the long cushion, and then the red ball. That, too, would be a legal three-cushion billiard, but unfortunately, he came off the first rail too far, and hit the red ball early.

Feel free to ask more questions.

EDIT: I watched the beginning again, and Reyes third shot is not a cross-table. I was looking at Blomdahl's cue ball go back and forth. Sorry for adding more confusion.

Hey Sweet one...

Here's a better video to understand. T. Blomdahl is probably the greatest 3-cushion player ever. This is part 2 of a run of 15. You will see that Blomdahl is using the yellow ball (white ball=opponent, yellow= Blomdahl, red=neutral). Follow his ball (yellow) around the table. You will see he will hit his opponents ball (white), or the red ball (neutral) first, then his ball (yellow) will hit 3 or more rails, then hit the other that hasn't been struck yet. Sometimes they will go rail first, BUT pay attention to this video, a liitle more clear. ENJOY, this is what pocket billiards originated from. Some say it dates back as far as the egyptians in the 15th century, and also Shakespeare references it in his writings...

For instructional videos/books, check out this thread on AZ.

http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=133012

Also, if you are interested in taking lessons, you can find 3-cushion instructors in your area that offer discounted lessons (some free) on the United States Billiard Association website at this link:

http://www.usba.net/docs/pdf/DiscountedLessons.pdf

And you can also find a list of rooms that have carom tables on the USBA website at

Have fun!!

Why 2 seperate threads on the same subject???
After I posted in the Main Forum, someone directed me to this separate section. I said thanks, and created a new post here, but apparently there are people in the Main Forum who kept posting in the original one. I'm getting good information from both, though.

I should have asked your permission first. Many, many apologies.

Maybe Sweet Marissa wanted opinion from both PoolPlayers and CaromPlayers. Or she was told to post here to get a better answer.

Beside at sometime We All Double post Threads. Where does it say you cannot!!

Sweet Marissa - if you're going to the Valley Expo. I know both Dieckman and Paul Frankel who be happy to not only explain, but show you the game and a few shots. As I belive there will be a billiard table close by http://forums.azbilliards.com/showpost.php?p=1712478&postcount=101. You're welcome to mention both my Az name and real name to both Dieckman and Frankel.

Also write 'Frederic Caudron' in Youtube(1999 World Champion) .There must be still some excerpts from his educational DVD.He explains in English several beautiful and basic shots(Force follows;draw shots etc...)

watching good matches is essential .Check out Accu-stat (pay per view or DVD Section) and especially CaromTV catalog(downloadable matches)
All the commentary helping Mr Carl does very good job but Robert Raiford 's commentary is top notch and you can learn a lot of things from him like me .Watching those matches make you familiar with the players, their styles ,the general culture of 3C and a lot of basic shots/tactics etc.

all the cue sports are phantastic, but 3C is another thing. The most elegant one.

regards,
