I am sure you all know of Melissa Herndon's 3rd place finish in the US Open- the most prestigious women's pool tournament in the world. I predict that in the next few years she is going to be on top of women's pool if she keeps it up. She is also my good friend and is a regular at the poolhall I work at. It really is amazing sometimes- often I see players practicing before a big tournament, and they are not playing that well (compared to how they normally play), but when the time comes, suddenly they play in top gear. Before a tournament I saw Ernesto Dominguez practicing and he didn't seem to be playing half as good as he is capable of playing. When the match started, I don't think he missed one ball, and it lasted throughout the tournament. Melissa was kind of the same way right before she left, but people told me she was playing jam-up in the tournament. I guess she is one of those people who can "turn it on" when they need to.
One time I played Melissa in a local tournament, and at the time I was in dead punch. I had alot of confidence before the match started, but I think she might have left me 3 shots total in a race to 8, and I got smoked. At the time I knew here but wasn't really close to her, but after that I had gained a huge amount of respect for her game. It takes such a strong mental game to hang in there with those other players, like Allison and Karen. Someone described her match on the TV table, and that is amazing to play so well when it is your first time playing on TV. I know for one thing that myself and millions of other players would fold under the pressure, probably wouldn't be able to make a straight in shot. But Melissa was able to hold her own, and that is the sign of a future champion.
Good Job Melissa!!!
