Congratulations Brett Stottlemyer, Pa. State 9 Ball Champion

CaptainJR

Shiver me timbers.

I don't know very many details. Brett went straight through the winners bracket to go undefeated and win the $4000.00 added Pa. State 9 Ball Championship this past weekend in Indiana Pa. $3600 first place (plus Calcutta share). Nice pay day. Strong field here. The only thing I won was the draw (Pat McNally) so I went home early. Maybe someone else can add some detail.

Great job by Brett. He is a real nice guy with a monster break. Thanks for the update, CapJR!

Since you brought up his 'monster break' I will add a couple details about the format.

Alternate break
Break from the box.
Only use your playing cue to jump.
Break stick could not have phonalic (sp geez) tip. (I had to use a house stick to break)

This eliminated a little of the effect of Brett's strong break. Don't get me wrong, he still has a very good break, but I think it shows that he is also a strong player.

Great win for Brett. I was wondering where he was this past weekend when he didn't show up at First Break in Sterling, VA for the Tiger/PP 9-Ball event.

I read that Frankie Hernandez, once again, won the Hampton Ridge tournament in Pottsville, PA, and, of course, Tiger-sponsored Shawn Putnam, the No. 1 ranked in the UPA, scored a big win on the Tiger/PP 9-Ball tour. Lots of happenings this past weekend in pool on the East Coast.

Yowza! $3,600 is certainly not chump change, and I think this may be Brett's biggest title win, aside from the PP 9-Ball Tour Season Finale last year.

I can't think of anybody who is more deserving than Brett! I can see his wife cheering him in the winner's circle. She must be proud as punch! Great news, indeed! :)

CaptainJR, who came in second and third, just out of curiosity?

Last year, I think Joe DiPietro was the Pennsylvania State champ, and the year before it was Phil who shoots out of Drexeline Billiards in Drexel Hills, PA, if memory serves me correctly. I can't remember Phil's last name.

That is an interesting set of rules, but ones which are utilized in other venues relating to the jump cue. The alternate break format seems to be quite popular these days. Who was racking the balls, CaptainJR? Was it the incoming breaker or his opponent?

Adam Smith I think was who Brett played in the final. I don't know who came in 3rd. The non-breaker racked the balls in all but one match that I watched. Sort of funny that way because when I saw this one match that the breaker was racking, I realized that they had never specified that and nobody ask. It just seemed to be assumed that the breaker didn't rack his own.

This Adam Smith was very young and could really play pool. Do you know him by name JAM?

You know, CaptainJR, I had to look him up on the Player listings on the AzBilliards Main Page to be sure. I've seen him before.

I am very impressed with the database of pool players to date on the Main Page of this website, most likely the only one in existence, and it is a great resource.

That is him: Phil Sherman. He's a strong player in his own right and a very nice guy.

Here's a picture of Phil at the action table several years back at the Super Billiards Expo in Valley Forge with sweat on his brow, counting his cheese! :p

JAM, your talking about the PA state Championship that is on BAR TABLES held out in Mechanicsberg every year hosted by Coby Atkins. That is the one that Pat, Joey, Phil and others have won.

The PA state championship that just happened took place in INDIANA PA.
It is the one that happens on 9 footers.
It is a very nice tournament, with good added money. The only problem is the fact that the pool tables, while being 9 footers, have bar box lights over them, instead of a standard sized light.
This means that each table has a box of shadows (DARK) near the rails, and it plays havoc with some of the players. It's harder to see darker balls near the rails so people miss cause they didn't actually visualize the aim point right when cutting at balls.

I don't know if they've ever bothered to change it, but that's the way i remember it.

Congratulations go out to Brett. Not only for the win, but for winning under those conditions. More power to him.

I did not know that. Is Coby Atkins the gentleman that used to run Diamond Billiards in Lancaster, PA?

I wonder how much monies were added, and I also would like to know how many players showed up.

I've been to some spots that have different colored light bulbs in the overhead lamp which really sucks a big egg! :p

And how about the pool rooms which have no overhead lighting, just the illumination from the ceiling lights!

Brett Stottlemyer is a formidable opponent in any tournament he enters, and I am very happy to see Brett win this one. It is nice to see him reap some of the benefits after devoting so many hours to his game. :)

Yes he is the same guy. Shame the pool room shut down. It was a great room for tournaments. There have always been at least 2 different Pa. championships. Coby's Barbox production, and either Indiana or Tacony (in philly) had the 9 ft events.

I know Indiana used to be $5000 added. but this time it was $4000

I'd almost rather have lights from the ceiling than deal with a box of shadows around the table. At least the lighting would be more consistent.
That shadow junk is just brutal. If your not used to it, you can miss EASY cut shots just cause your perception is wrong.

As a matter of fact. If your ever up at Drexeline again, you will be quite impressed. Bob just got the new Brunswick lights to hang up, and take down those lights that he had there before. (which were good) It is like 2 different worlds. You can see EVERYTHING. Even when compared to the brightest of the old lights. They just blow them away.

Yeah, Brett plays good. He definitely gets the A for effort.

SUPERSTAR, when did Bob put the new lights in? I was there Sunday night and the same old lights were still there. Bob has really been making the place look good latley, new carpet new bathrooms new seats.

Yesterday was the first one. He had the HORSE thing out that straddled the table to put the light on, while he rigged it inside the ceiling and connected it to the wires. It was on table 11, and it was more of an experiment to find out how to do it. Now that he knows, it will be easy he said. So it should be a couple of weeks before they ALL get done, but if you go in there tonight, and just look at that light, it is like a mini SUN over on that side of the room. Compare THAT light to table 9 (darkest of the old lights) and you'll see just HOW dark that table really was compared to table 5. (one of the brightest of the old)

That's good info. I like to keep up on the regional pool smut! :p

Diamond Billiards was a wonderful place to have tournaments. The only drawback for my camp was it was located in dry county!

That's still good monies added. :) May be a sign of the times, the dime drop.

I wonder if those goggles Earl Strickland wears would assist with vision clarity on a table with faulty shadows, the yellow lenses.

I really do like that pool room. If they only had a Drexeline in the D.C. area, it would be great for me and mine. I especially like the pool paraphernalia and classic photos on the walls. The only time I have been there is on the Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour. The owner, a great shooter himself, continually keeps pool alive and exciting in Drexel Hills, PA, by hosting tournaments. You're a lucky duck!

I think I remember hearing Jimmy Fusco recently bought a new pool room in that area. Have you been there, and what's it like?

They must have changed the lights cause I would have noticed something like that.

That would be great. I remember being there numerous years, and the lights were the same size you'd see over a bar box. Maybe 4 ft. long. I know that it was like that at least until last year i think, when Eddie A. won. I remember talking to a few people who complained that the trip wasn't worth it due to the poor lighting.

Then again, some people don't notice things like that. It just doesn't bother them. I'll have to ask around, and see if the lights were changed or not. If they were, i'll have to pack my bags next year.

I was there on Saturday, and the lights are still bar box lights over the 9-foot tables.

The field was very strong and also included Pat McNally (Scranton, PA), Justin Bergman, Shaun Wilkie (Havre de Grace, MD), Mike Miller (Easton, PA), Eddie Abraham (last year's winner), Dave Daya (Mt. Carmel, PA), Ed Deska (Maryland), Rob Hart (aka "40", the owner of Ball Busters in Philly), Billy Walk (Altoona, PA), Brian Mahan (Pittsburgh, PA), and Marc Vidal (aka "Spain", New York City), among many others.

Among those missing who did well last year were Pooky Rasmeloungon (Arlington, VA), Lee Holt (Philly), and Matt Clatterbuck (Front Royal, VA).
