Cored Fronts

I was just wondering......can you plug the forearm of a house cue blank? Or a full splice blank with a maple forearm? For instance. If the cue is too butt heavy due to the wood's natural character, is it possible to core the maple forearm with a heavier wood and core the butt end with maple to lighten the butt and put weight in the front. If I sound like an idiot asking, it's because I have no idea of what the hell I'm talking about. :D

But I thought it would be an interesting concept. IF you can't do as I mentioned above. How is it that you can put weight foward on a sneaky pete? Or is it impossible?

Tony

Yes, that can be done with no problem as long as it's not a full length H/C. Even if it is a full length it could be done if some one has a long enough gun drill.

What wood do you usually prefer to core the forearm with?

Tony

If I am coring a light weight wood, to give it more weight & stabillity, I use cores of Bacote. It is reasonably prices & easily available, straight graned & fairly heavy. If I am coring to lighten a heavier wood, I use straight grained Maple. If I am coring a small plug, in the joint end, I use what ever wood is in the forearm, for the plug...JER

would you core a small plug in the joint end to add weight? If you had an ebony blank you wanted to be more foward balanced....would you core the ebony with maple and then core the maple with ebony/coco? I guess I'm asking if this procedure is going to damage the structure of the cue so much that the cue won't play as good as it's potential.

The "plug" I talked about is NOT to add weight. Hit is very subjective to the individual, but if I core an Ebony farearm with Maple to reduce the weight, then the majority of the wood, on my wood to wood joint, would be the Maple of the shaft, touching the Maple core in the forearm. I have found that if I use a 2" plug of Ebony at the joint it restores the hit you expect from a solid Ebony forearm, without adding much weight. If you want a Q with a foreward balance, I refer you to those, that make that kind of Q. If you want a BLACK HEART CUE, you'll get a Q with a balance point of 18"-18 1/2" from the end of the butt cap. So, I core to bring the weight down & to achieve MY BALANCE POINT. I DO NOT CORE FOREARMS WITH POINTS. However, I have plugged the joint end of pointed Qs, to achieve a harder hit. My personal playing Q has a forearm of Birdseye Maple, with points of Cocobolo. It has a Cocobolo plug in the joint. I made an exact copy of this Q without the plug & it has a softer hit. I'm not saying that everyone should do this, only that I have found it to give good results, without any negative ones...JER
