I'm looking to have a one piece butt cored. But don't know what to use as a core.

My cue maker has a gun drill bit but hasn't done this in a while. I'd like to have my one piece butt cored out in possibly two stage but don't know the specs yet.

I like the look of one piece purple heart or one piece maple..but I've seen the one piece maples come out at 17 oz or 18oz cues...I'm looking to have a 19oz cue. So I need a heavier core.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you going for a one piece wood butt, I would recommend starting with a 30 or 31 inches 1.5 inch dowel. If I were doing it I would core the dowel at its full size and then start turning. Now this process could take a year or more, in fact I just finished a Zebra wood one piece butt that was cored in 2007. I started turning it around may of that year and finished it in 2011. I took extra time turning down that was not necessary but I believe that good things come to those who wait, and both myself and the customer who bought the cue were very happy with it.

If you want to add weight to a one piece dowel I would use either Purple Heart or possibly even Iron Wood for the core, but the wood used would depend on the cues final weight. Another way to add weight during the construction process would be to add and extra long joint pin. In the cue I was talking about above I used a 5 inch 3/8-10 screw, 3 7/8 inch were inside the cues forearm and the rest was exposed.
