Coring handles

pardon my ignorance, what is the common diameter of the handle at the point where the handle meets the forearm ?

can you go with a 1 inch core ?

Yes, maybe, if your good. The finished diameter at the A-joint usually runs from around .990 to 1.060 depending on your butt taper being straight or compound. This is after sanding and finish. At one inch, if your core center is off just a few thousandths or your A-joint doesn't come out exactly on the money your handle is going to wipe out.

Since the outer wood is "pretty" .........much useless, does 7/8 core handle be enough to support a cue ?

Pardon my ignorance.......but why would you want to build a cue with useless wood?

800-875 core will work just fine in the handle area....

ok id like to add to the question. does anyone have experience with exotic wood handles under the wrap?
let me explain...

i want to make a few titlist tribute using martins titlist veneers. they re dead on!!!

short splice forearms but i want to test usine the same piece of rosewood for the handle and buttsleeve. just nut a wrap groove like maple and put a wrap over rosewood. maybe this will give it a full splice like feel. i know it will make the cue a little heavier but if i dont use a bulky ss joint a nice 4 oz shaft to offest and no wieghtbolt i think it could come out to a decent weight like 19.5 total.

has anyone tried this???

Yes they are really nice

Still has a A joint, so no full splice feel, depending on rosewood, could be lighter than maple

has anyone tried this???

I've done it with purpleheart, rosewood(indian) and a couple of trade secrets. Not a bad way to add or subtract weight and or balance point.

im gonna try it. maybe ill just core the last 6 inches or so. im using brazilian rosewood by the way

Ive seen plenty of cues with burl handles and 3/4" cores. They all played just fine, and some would argue they play excellent. I've built quite a few amboyna forearmed cues, and they all play great - never a complaint.

This is what I do. I core my forearms .685! Since my joint is .830 that still gives me a good wall where myjoint rings start. As far as Exotic wood handles. I have used them. Other than the weight issue I haven't had any problems. however I solved the weight issue with coring them also.

I believe that's like paying 3.40 for hi test when 2.40 for the 87 grade will get you there and you won't feel the difference.
We all like to experiment now and then but I think your missing the point between a FS and a jointed butt.
