cork wrap

O.K.. I just installed my first cork wrap and am unhappy with the final results. The wrap measured .033-.034 in thickness which is thicker than a linen wrap groove is deep. Instead of cutting the groove deeper and making the cue much harder to put on linen later if desired, I installed the wrap and attempted to sand the cork down flush. Talk about tough action. I tried different grits of paper and put one layer of blue painters tape on the cue trying to protect the finish. It seems as though this stuff grows! It doesn't feel to bad but a little while later it feels much thicker. I asked an expert on wraps a question and got the proper answer but I don't want to bother him again. He's always been very helpful with any questions I have asked him and I don't want to wear out my welcome trying to get to much detail. SO, what grit do you guys sand with? Do you seal the cork with anything? How do you clean it? PLUS, if you have any other helpful hints, don't be bashful, throw them at me.

Thanks in advance as I'm sure I'll receive some helpful hints.
