Cornbread Red finds a sucker

Well since I am snowed in I thought I would share a past memory of one of the alltime great players and personalities of the game. It was around 1992 or 1993 I believe the former because Cornbread didn't yet finish second to Champagne Eddie in Grady's big 1 pocket tourney. Red made the jaunt down to Ohio for a game but it didn't materialize so late one night in my poolroom in strolls Red and two other guys. The poolroom I was in had regulars such as Troy Frank, Chris Szuter and at the time Jack Hynes. I was there with my onepocket mentor Glen Knowles and Red barked at Glen to play some 100 onepocket to kill time. Glen god bless his soul wouldn't play 100 a game on his own scratch unless he had the nuts. Red offered him a small spot and Glen passed I wanted to see em play and told Glen to get up and shoot six barrels at him. Glen played lights out and you could tell Red was getting a lil frustrated since he was supposed to be stealing. They were even after about 4 hrs and in walks to flashy dressed guys that sounded like the were having a good ol time. Anyone that has ever been to Starcher's billiards in Akron Ohio knows the action table was right by the door well it happened to be a Friday night and all 20+ tables except the one beside Red and Glen were taken. The guys started giving the counterman (Pepsi Mark also a fair player) a hard time about not having a table when one was open. Red overheard the commotion and said we have a lil more then pride on the line here to which one of the guys replied you guys can't play you missed that shot by a "ghetto ass" (his words not mine but made me chuckle). The taller guy said to Red I'll play ya for whatever you want I just want to play. Someone said they are playing 100 a game and the tall guy laughed and said that's all? By this time I could see Red's eye glimmer and knew I might see a score. Red said to Glen and me are we done, I replied we are if I can get a piece Red chuckled said depends what you call a piece. Red said I'll play you 500 a game if you want The shorter guy said play for a thousand Red peeled off 10 hundreds and said post. The guys said what do you mean post? Red said put the money up and let's play. Both the tall and short guy said we don't put no money up you win we pay I win you pay. He then proceeded to whip out a roll no not a roll a stack thats had to be around 20k in hundo's. Red wouldn't budge on posting and they wouldn't either I could smell a score and told Red take a shot give us half and Ill pay if you lose first game he countered with you got 300 of it and we can split if I lose a game. I knew it could be a score. They wanted to play 8ball and there was no way they were players so 8 ball it was call everything lol. Red beats tall guy 2 games then short guy says I'll play double or nothing and Red beats him a game. Then Red offers he has to bank the 8 in and he sticks em up for another 2k last game they played they only had to make the 8 playing partners and Red takes it down so 4 hrs playing Glen breaking even then winning 8k in 45 min Red was a trip at one point they were laughing (real friendly stickup) and The short guy says you gonna let that old Honky beat you? Someone said something to Red and he said I'll be a Honky as long as they keep jacking up the bet. Gotta love Cornbread

92, 93 and a little later was when pool was really good in that part of Ohio. There were pool halls opening everywhere. Had a lot of great players from that area too like Troy, JR, Frank Zummo, Tulio and quite a few others.

I used to work at Dello's Rack n Roll on Mentor Ave at that time. I moved to NC in 95.
