i'm new to pool.i'm on my second cycle of league pool 8 ball.went from one night a week to one night and subbing another.i've got the bug.

practice anywhere from 45 mins. to 2 hours 5-6 days a week.
everything i do is usually center ball hitting.

i'm trying to teach myself english from watching ppl i shoot with and the pros on tv.

today i had this shot come up.

i have a ball sitting in front of the side pocket.ob is acroos the table from me.cue ball is to the left of the ob in the middle of the table.slight angle.8 ball is to the right of the ob mid table.

i know when i pocket the ball with center hit the cb will go to the right, come off the rail and leave me in a straight line with the 8 ball causing me to have to bank the 8.i know using right side english will just widden the natural path of the cb and take me behind the 8b causing me to shoot down table.so i thought if i use left side english maybe it will shorten the natural path of the cb and would put me in line for a shorter shot in the corner. i tried it and it worked perfectly.
did i figure out a piece of the english puzzle or did i get lucky?

If you didn't know it would work when you shot it, you got lucky.

That's not all bad, though... one of the best things that I've been taught is to make all your decisions standing, execute your shot and just stay down; if it works, remember that it worked and how it worked ... if not, ask yourself why it went wrong and think of how you'll approach it next time.

This way your mind learns to see familiar shots and you won't struggle as much to determine english or speed, you'll just know.

The proof of the pudding is to set up the same shot and shoot it again. If you got to the same position on the 8 you weren't lucky. If you didn't get there on the first re-try... try again... and again... and again until you do. Mark the spots on the table where the balls are positioned with hole reinforcers (from 3-ring binders). That way, you're shooting the same shot over and over... and not one that is just close to the same shot.

When players are just getting started they often hit whitey off-center... which results in a lot of inconsistency for making shots and predicting where whitey will go.

Focus on hitting whitey where you plan to and you'll speed up your learning process.

Also, buy the book "Play Your Best Pool" by Phil Cappelle. It will also speed up your learning process now that you've got the bug.

Good luck on your journey brother!

Congrats on the shot brother. Now go download the WEI table so we all know what you're talking about. Peace.

For beginners, it is best to not use english if you can avoid it.

Shoot just the cue ball at the far center diamond using a center hit. Do this 10 times. Then do same with left english, then 10 times with right english. You should notice that the cue ball does not go to the same exact spot as a dead center hit.

So this means you need to aim differently when using english.

Next break a rack and shoot in all the balls using left english for every shot. You will probably miss a lot more shots than when using a center hit.

Many times using a stop shot, draw, or follow will leave the cue ball in a good spot for your next shot. (Along with shooting the correct speed [speed control], very slow, slow, medium, fast, very fast.)

Once you are good at; speed control, stop shots, follow, and draw, and want to learn english, search the billiards forums for the following terms...

Squirt
Cue ball deflection
Predator
Backhand english
Fronthand english
Throw
