Counting tree growth rings

Do you count the lighter area between the darker rings as the growth ring ? Burned plenty of wood but never thought about correct way to count the rings . If you count the lighter area my Huebler shaft has 12 .

Butt at joint has 10 , counting the way you described shaft has 14-15 , heck not to bad .
