Cowboy rules question

The BCA rulebook states that in the game of cowboy... "On all shots, the player must cause the cue ball to contact an object ball, and then the cue ball OR object ball MUST contact a cushion."

Is this a typo or does it mean that a rail must be contacted after the shot whether or not a ball was pocketed? In other words, is this rule there to prevent someone from just hitting simple straight in shots on the 5-ball over and over and over?

And by the way, has anyone ever played a "perfect" game of cowboy? i.e. 101 points in one turn at the table.

I'm assuming that a pocketed ball counts as a rail hit, as in nine ball... I'm guessing it's a typo (or rather an unintentional omission).

So then, if I end up lined up on the 5 as illustrated, I can simply shoot soft straight follow shots over and over until I reach 90 points?

I believe so. That's why I always thought that more points should be given for the caroms than the ball pocketing count.

Thanks for the confirmation guys. Wow, I've been playing the game wrong this whole time! Actually I think that it is way more challenging to play when you have to go to a rail on every shot. I'm still looking for the perfect run. My best yet is only 83 points in one turn (going to the rail on every shot). Of course, I'm assuming that this game is NOT call shot. :-)
