Cracked finish on McDermott butt

Friend of mine handed me a McDermott "Harley Davidson" butt the other night. The finish was flaking off in large chunks. I realize the cue is probably not worth the effort but I told her I would try to get the remainder of the decals and clear coat removed.

I used a plastic scraper to remove the loose material. Any ideas on how to strip off the remainder?

Call McD to see if they have the transfers and how much it would be to refinish it. It may also be under warranty, if your friend has the receipt.

Not really worth the hassle, if you ask me.

<~~you didn't ask me.

I told her that but she doesn't have a lot of money. It's unlikely she'd have the receipt.

Thought I'd do a good deed. She said she was ok without the decals. She just couldn't stand the feel of the cracked finish in her hands.

Wonder if paint stripper would hurt anything?

Paint stripper can open a nightmare in some cases, I agree with Ryan, get in touch with McDermott. Their finish is thick, real thick.

I'd send it into McDermott for their maintenance program. It costs $22 and they might deem the damage to be a manufacturer defect. At the very least it will come back clean smooth with a new tip.

It's worth $22

Depending on where she originally bought it, they may be able to reprint the receipt from their file.

Just an update. Decided to use my heat gun and a plastic scraper. Worked like a charm. I was very careful not to overheat.

Sanded on my lathe and filled the cracks. Ready to spray. This will definitely be a money loser but I was curious to see what would work.

BTW, I asked her if she left the cue in her car in the summertime. She said she always had and it never hurt anything. Pool players...
