Cracked Slate

OK, here is my delima. Got a great price on a Brunswick Regina 4.5x9 with 6 legs. 1.5 inch slate but, one of the slates is cracked through to the backing. Owner claims the table plays great and I like 14.1 so no banging allowed but the roll needs to be perfect. The rest of the table is in good shape and has been posted here back in Feb. when I was looking for a value. Any opinions of dealing with a cracked slate? Can the backing really hold it together enough so that the repair of the crack is like closing the seams between slates? It's a great table for $1800.00 but I don't want to end up with another $1000+ in repairs. Any advice would be appreciated.

slate crack

pictures of your cracked slate? That allways helps...
Most cracks can be repaired in slates...the cost of repairs is worth it'

Pull the slate apart and off the backing. Get some clamps and straps. Super glue it together and use the clamps and straps to hold it in place. Use bondo to fill any low spots and sand lightly to perfection. Ron

First your gonna need some soup cans..... I am pretty sure they were chicken noodle.....lol.

DO NOT try this with Cream of Mushroom, but low sodium is OK:

Absolutely worth it

I bought a 1930's Brunswick Madison for $300 and one of the pieces of slate was cracked down the middle from once side to other (someone dropped it while moving it). A local repair specialist used some form of epoxy, sanded it smooth and it plays perfect. Honestly, I forgot it was cracked until I saw this post.

I'm not sure exactly what he used, but I can find out if you'd like.

good fix

my friend lays tile and repairs tile and granite and misc we repaired it like they repair marble and granite.....he channelled out both sides of the break from the bottom and cut 3/8ths ready rod and laid that in the channel and filled with epoxy....to keep entire slates flat.. he put aluminum angle iron under. when all cured we turned over and the lines are visible but not felt, and all 3 pieces were broke, not cracked but broke and took less than five or six hours total time to repair over course of 3 days...

table plays perfect and is a gcIII and even one pocket slow rolling is great

hope this helps ps you can see the rod through the epoxy if you look under table and makes for a good laugh
