Just a Ho Hum 10 in a row.
I wrote this for the high rack thread, but thought I should re-post it here as it really fits here even better. So, I'm sorry if you have read it already.
When I was 18 my Step-dad and I went to play some for the first time. I used to just go watch him play against other people. He ran 10 9-ball racks in a row on a 4.5' x 9' Gandy. I never said a word. He broke game 11, made 2 balls, had a perfect shot on the one, and nothing was tied up. He looked over at his drink and chair and snipped the one ball snug behind the 8 and went three rails with the cue ball to safe me frozen behind the 9.
I looked up at him in utter disbelief and said, "What the hell are you doing? You just ran 10 in a row and you chose to play safe?"
He looked at me like I was an idiot and said, "I wanted a drink and needed to sit for a second."
I started laughing my *** off and said, "OMG! You know you could have just said time-out or something."
All I could think of was, I wonder how many he had run in the past. He never talks about triumphs or brags so I have always wondered. To this day, he has ever told me.
Funny ending to this story. About 6 months after this, he quits pool COLD, gives me his cue and goes out and starts playing golf. He had never even played golf before. Five years later, he passes his playing test to be a professional and his now gives golf lessons.
