Crazy foul--need ruling

I agree with the idea that calling for a forfeit after he makes his next shot is wrong. He needs to stop the match at the point of the foul and ask for a ruling.

That being said, yeah, you take your lumps when it's a local bar, local tournament, local TD, and local players. You got screwed but it's to be expected.

your opponent should've called that on you before you made the shot. plus, it's not a forfeit because you only fouled by touching the cue ball with your hand. any ball pocketed should be remained in the pocket, and a ball-in-hand should be awarded to your opponent.

Okay, all these different versions of bar rules are hilarious! Bar rules are called "bar rules" because it's up to the house what the rules are. In oldey times, "straight 8" fouls did call for pocketed balls to come back up...some places allowed ball in hand (behind the headstring) or play the shot from where it is. Old versions of the BCA rulebook are out there that spell out the old rules...the current rules came out to stop pushing the cue ball...even under the old rules, blatant sandbagging of a shot could be ruled a foul by a referee.

TD should have:
1. been watching the hot seat match...what the hell was he "directing" anyway?
2. shouldn't have ruled on a foul after the game is concluded...or at a minimum he should have ruled a re-rack and start that game over. Ruling on a foul after the game is over is sour grapes from the loser (who wouldn't have said anything if he won) and definitely shenanigans on the part of the TD.

I was playing a tournament in Mannheim Germany back in 1992...8 ball race to one (!) double elimination. I wouldn't have bothered to play in that format, but first prize was 3,500 deutchmarks, which was like $2800, so why not? I won two matches, scratched the 8 on an unlucky kick...came back to win two more matches on the losers' side and was in the final 4. Ran 6 balls off the break, sank my last ball in the side pocket, kissing it off the 8 to push the 8 toward the corner pocket (I didn't need to carom it off the 8, but the side wasn't available to the 8 after pocketing my last ball, so I needed to nudge it down the rail). I called it, very easy, very routine, nailed it and my Turkish opponent called foul. TD came over and confirmed that playing any ball off the 8 was a loss...I spent 2 years playing pool all over Germany and never got to the bottom of their 8 ball rules!

...TD came over and confirmed that playing any ball off the 8 was a loss...

That's why I don't play straight 8. If I hit my ball first, and the ball I call goes in the pocket, and I don't drop the 8 ball or the cue ball, I can't wrap my mind around that not being a valid shot. I had somebody tell me one time that because I made two balls on the shot and only called one of them, it was a miss. Had somebody else tell me that making their ball on my shot (in addition to my shot) was a foul. Unbelievable what people come up with.

Oh, yeah, one other time playing call shot, I called my ball off their ball into the side, and they waited until after I successfully made the shot to tell me it wasn't a legal shot because I caromed off their ball. TD confirmed it was a foul, and the fact that I had called the shot that way didn't matter in the slightest. Good times.

crazy 8

I can vouch for this "local rules" experience.

I was playing in a small pool room's Midnight Madness Friday/Saturday 9 ball event (out of town event for me). 9 Ball on bar boxes @$1/game. Entry fee did not include free table play.

There was a small crowd, less than 16 players DE 4w/3L that started at midnight.

I ended up winning the 'hot seat' match and the TD gave me 2nd place money as soon as the match ended. He told me that 'out of towners' could only finish 2nd in their pool room. Only 'regulars' could play for 1st place.

I would have hit him. Probably would have had to run after I did, but I still would. Just sayin.

I think most of us would agree that once you accept the penalty, and shoot, you'r chance to cry forfeit is out the window. You got nailed by the factor, that you were new to the place and the T.D. was his buddy.

I mean seriously, This was a 5 dollar or 10 dollar entry fee to draw in some locals so they would purchase beer and food at thier establishment. I have not seen a bar tournament that uses these rules with a entry fee higher than $5 in my area. Let me guess, they got mad when you played a safe too ???

I recently went to a $5 tournament at a bar. I was on my way to my fathers and saw a sign, pool tourney today. So i went in, used a bar cue, and they explained me these rules. They said "You have to make an honest effort when you attempt a shot " I said who is the judge of that??? So rack 1 , i move the cueball about 1 inch behind my ball, they said that was not an honest offort, i said i tried my hardest not to leave my opponent a shot.

Needless to say, i won the tourney, they were mad, and a barbrawl almost started. I bought everyone in the tourney a beer and left. My dad frequently goes there. He said the next week they changed the rules to ball in hand rules.

GET WITH THE TIMES.

I've tried to understand the kind of thinking that goes on with bar pool.

A group of guys that cant play the game playing by a set of rules that makes the game harder for them.

I'm not suggesting all bar shooters cant play, just saying that the majority of the bar players dont understand things.

Once at my friends bar, I ran a $10 tournament for him, 8-ball race to 2, call pocket, ball in hand CB foul only. I had one group of guys complaining because it was single elimination (with $5 buy-back), they wanted double (with UNLIMITED buy-back). 4-5 other guys didnt want to play ball in hand. A couple other guys wanted to play call it how it goes instead of call pocket. Nobody understood 'race to 2' either.

Very frustrating to say the least. I just dont get their mentality.
