crooked tournament, cuecollector.com

FWIW, I do know T Dorn and he is a hell of a player. He has played in a few tournaments back home in Charleston, SC when he lived there for awhile that I ran. He was always been a good and honest person in all of the dealings I have had with him. I have never known him to try and steal a tournament, and would gladly let him come back and play in any tournament I had.

We are also getting two biased views of what went on here. They always say there are three sides to the story. Each parties then an unbiased view. It would have been interesting to be there when this happened, but as we weren't who knows what really happened.

And busting on someone's grammar on a message board is kinda lame.

Sounds like instead of the TD being in with someone that Trav is the one going in with his friend otherwise why all the stink? B

reply to mike

"You did call me a crook. You say that I bring people in, rank them low, and split with them. I challenge you to find anyone to corroborate this story. It is simply not true. I haven't made a dollar from anyone else who has played the tournament."

i challenge you on this because your boy smitty has a big mouth.yesterday....i repeat just "yesterday" smitty was asked how much he had one for getting third in the tournament his reply was and i quote"i got 80 and whatever mike wins we are in half"that was said right outside while smoking.so this makes you something like a "liar". either you or him but anyway.....why don't ya'll settle this on the table.play for it.get your boss man and get up a few hundred and play for it or are you not ready for t dorn yet.anyway mike you are a "crook"

about the crooked tourn..

I was the guy with t dorn at the tourn. Me and tdorn shot there the night before and mike and cue man was playin two tables next to us. They had to see me shoot acouple of balls. Besides the point not just about me tryin to be a 5 I didnt care about 5 6 or 7 I told tdorn I wasnt going to play if I was a 6 cause it was crooked. All of mikes buddies are low ranked there is one 5 i think and he is acouple of balls better than me. That night before the tourn me and t dorn shoot and he is an 11 or 12 and he was rankin me a 5, we raced to 7 twice i won one set and he won one set we was tryin not to get hustled at the tourn. At the opening tourn at racktime I saw some mistakes on the handicaps. There is just players there that r ranked a 5 and gamble with people that are an 8 and the 5 handy, spots the 8 ball but thats their freind ranked a 5. Also a girl has been playing weekly, she won one tourn as a 3 then another nest week as a three and just got moved up to a 4. THis girl can run about 4 or five balls also. Me and t dorn wasnt tryin to run the tourn they was tryin g to run the tourn on me. so thats my opinoin.

J. Hall

some people can hustle some get hustled but not me.

How much is the entry fee in the tournament?

Seems to me the new guy should always be ranked higher just so he will pay his dues. After he plays a couple times then his level could be adjusted to the true ranking. You don't like that, then don't play.

Why should the regular guys who come in and play every week be forced to spot an unknown?

But I will tell you something. You come into my home, bad mouth me, call me a crook and your lousy ass will be out on the street and I never want to see you again. You ain't no friend of mine.

Besides, why are you even playing in a handicapped tournament? If you are that good then you should be playing in the open tournaments.

Nice Guy Trav Dorn Done Wrong At Racktime

FIRST OFF, LET ME SAY THAT TRAV DORN IS ONE OF THE MOST HONEST POOL PLAYERS IN THE BUSINESS. NEVER, HAVE I HEARD ANYONE SAY THAT HE HAS CHEATED OR THROWN ANYBODY IN THE CREEK (UNLIKE THE MENTIONED). TRAV IS ALWAYS THE MOST QUIET OF PLAYERS, EVEN THOUGH HE RUNS OUT LIKE PISS OUT OF THESE GUYS BOOTS. HE NEVER BEGS, SWINDLES, OR HUSTLES ANYONE OUT OF THEIR MONEY. HE'LL TELL YOU THAT HE PLAYS GREAT! **IF THIS GUY IS COMPLAINING, IT IS A GENUINE COMPLAINT...LOCAL PLAYERS LISTEN**. I CAN UNDERSTAND HOW OTHERS WOULD JUMP TO THE CONCLUSION THAT TRAV WAS BITCH'N OR TRYING TO STEAL A TOURNAMENT. YOU SIMPLY DON'T KNOW TRAV DORN, HE IS NOT THAT KIND OF GUY. BUT, YOU WON'T SEE MANY PLAYERS BACK HIM UP ON THIS PARTICULAR INCIDENT BECAUSE THEY WANT TO CONTINUE TO GO TO RACKTIME AND PLAY THE TOURNAMENTS. GREG MATHEWS HAS A GREAT POOL ROOM AND WE ALL THANK HIM FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE. MIKE TEMPLETON IS A GREAT PLAYER HIMSELF, AND DOES A GOOD JOB AS THE DIRECTOR OF THE TOURNAMENTS. I BELIEVE THAT THE "6" RANKING WOULD HAVE BEEN ACCEPTABLE TO TRAV IF HE FELT THAT MIKE WAS NOT QUESTIONING HIS HONESTY ABOUT THE SKILL OF THE PLAYER. TRAV WAS JUST TRYING TO BRING A "NEWBIE" TO THIS WONDERFULL GAME AND DIDN'T WANT TO DISCOURAGE HIM ABOUT HIS CHANCES. GREG MATHEWS' TOURNAMENTS HAVE SOME OF THE BETTER PLAYERS IN SOUTH CAROLINA PLAYING IN THEM, BECAUSE OF THE MONEY THAT HE ADDS. SO, OVER RANKING A "NEWBIE" EVEN SLIGHTLY WOULD BE A DISASTER FOR THAT PLAYER. THE MAJORITY OF THE PLAYERS ARE RANKED 9-12. GREG I HOPE THAT YOU CAN OVERLOOK THIS INCIDENT AND BRING TRAV BACK, BECAUSE HE IS SUCH A GREAT PERSON FOR POOL. I FEEL THAT HE WAS TRYING TO PROMOTE YOUR ROOM AND BRING A NEW FACE TO POOL. AS FAR AS THE OFFER OF A GAME TO MIKE TEMPLETON....MAN WHAT A GREAT GAME TO WATCH!

Hi,

I am Mike Templeton, and I am the tournament director at the ,,,,,,,,

Thanks for letting me tell my side of what happened.

Mike Templeton

mike,,,,you should establish a tournament rule that any unknown starts of at level x. it is fair to your regulars and alleviates altercations.

Bruin,

Thanks for the idea. I considered doing that, but we are getting a few novice players who are true beginners. But I could let them start at a medium level, and lower them accordingly.

Again, let me say that this is an unfortunate situation for everyone.

Thanks again for the advise.

Hi Mike,

Do you run a separate tournament for the lower half of your players? If you offered a place for beginners up to five (on a scale of 1 - 10) to play, you might get a better idea of who is a real lower level player. There are a lot of beginners who do not want to play with the sharks and stay home. There are sharks, who hate giving real big spots (10 - 3) and lose to a player who starts running racks, who stay home. If the true intent of a tournament is to draw new players to your room, give all players a reason to practice or give your stronger players a challenge, three tournaments might draw three times as well! I hate players who don't practice, lose a match and then complain that the spot was wrong!

You shouldn't suddenly change your tournament guidelines just because of one rotton apple. This is not the first time that ole' Travis has shown his ass. It is true that 95% of the time he is a great guy to be around. But just like a spoiled child, if Travis doesn't get his way, watch out! I was not present for his latest temper tantrum, but I've seen it in the past here in Greenville. If anyone has any questions about his personality disorder, they should contact Jimmy Hodges owner of Gametime. I'm pretty sure that he's no longer welcome there either. Travis has told me himself that he can't count the number of tournaments where he's banned.

Take my advice, you can't please everyone so don't even try.

If you really think any tournament director is stupid enough to cut up his own tournament, you sir, ARE AN IDIOT.

taylorsjoe,

Change is the way of life today. A lot of people don't like it but, it goes on anyway. I'm a long way from SC. Tournaments and pool rooms are the "same" everywhere. As a promoter, having more than one event per week, will draw more people to your room. More players to practice. More income for the room. That is a fact! I do not know who is right or wrong in this incident. I only know Mike, like every TD or room manager, has a problem. They need every entrant they can get. They also need to retain those entries. They sometimes need to be creative!

I have had several tournaments that I have cut up. When I was running an open 8 ball tournament I had around 30 players. I went to an APA 6 and under and seperate 7 tournament and then got around 50 players. It is true that seperating the great players from the regular players will work.

And when I seperated everyone based on handicap, I had around 80 players. Seperate brackets for 2-3,4,5,6,7.

Another thing he can do is put everyone 6 down in the bottom bracket and all others in the top. That way a low handicap will at least win 3rd every week. You will certainly have more lower handicaps playing if they know they always have a shot at winning something.

But what do I know, I'm just an idiot I guess

crooked????

Headhunter,

My understanding of the post is, you and LastTwo are arguing semantics. His reference is actively sharing income / outcome (cutting up) from a players winnings in a tournament you're running (favoritism). Your reference and mine is breaking apart brackets. Moving players to a more equal environment. Am I reading too much out of this? I tend to do that! Sorry.

I'm not sure what he's talking about.
If he's talking about cutting up the money, I know a lot of TD's buy calcutta's. Myself included. You just have to not let that determine how you run or rule the tournament. I have disqualified people I bought in the calcutta before.

crooked tournament

I am welcome in Jimmy Hodges place but simply do not support if I feel the need and when I told you that I have been banned from these small tournaments I meant because of winning little local tournaments not because of my attitlude. If I dont agree I am like a little kid, I just don't show my support, I don't brown noise for anyone. I don't go around people I dont like to be around, I don't need tournament money that bad.

crooked tournament

there is alot of misunderstanding in some of the replies to this entry.i don't really know what happened saturday, but i do know that the tournament director"mike templeton" is crooked.the problem with him is that he brings his friends down and let all of then in ranked way low.leon came down as an 8, which is what most of the good local players are and leon has spotted several of them the 8 and drilled them.and its was not that he was an unknown it was cause mike knew he had better odds.also his friend smitty came down and got in as a 5 but is really a 7 or 8 and then there is mike's cousin rick who came down and got in as a 5 and is really a 7.all of this makes mike crooked.the guy trav brought in really was a 5.the new place is great but if mike keeps running it greg will go under in a few months.i still say mike and trav need to play but i think mike is scared.

I know Trav plays better than I do. Thats not what this post is about. Not gambling better players and losing money doesn't make you scared. It makes you smart.

If you don't know the difference, I guess you are a Royal Fool.
