something else to consider:
- the tip may matter a little when it comes to leaving marks... The really hard tips (like the phenolic ones) cause a hotter spot at the point of impact, it apparently can even leave little scorch marks in the ball in rare cases (probably depending on the ball, tip, and breaker). There was a thread with photos showing this not too long ago.
Not too much of a stretch to imagine hotter contact point = more visible scorch mark on the table.
- simonis HR cloth may resist marking better, though that's a much pricier investment than a new cue ball.
