Cue Ball reaction after impacting a rail.

I would think skid might kill the rock somewhat causing it to slide along the geometric tangent but most of the overthrow happens on the object ball.
Skid causes the CB to "cling" to the OB as it is pushed forward or at an angle, which "drags" the tangent line slightly forward with the movement of the balls.

Bob Jewett, is this a good description of what happens with a skid?

The gearing at the cling point is what kills the rock. Figured that would straighten out the carom enough to affect the incidence to the cushion.

I think it is better described as throw that is much, much larger than expected. Also a simple follow shot can suffer from cling/skid as the cue ball jumps in the air and loses most of its follow. The path of the object ball is sent off line a lot but in theory the cue ball will still go perpendicular to the line of the OB and ghost ball.

But the equivalent of skid happens between ball and cushion. You often hear players complaining about big bounces off the cushion where the cue ball bounces much farther than expected. I think that's because high friction between ball and cushion (chalk?) causes the cue ball to wind up the rubber cushion which then rockets the cue ball away. (In reality the speed of the cue ball is still reduced but maybe by 30% instead of the usual 45%.)

I appreciate all of the information here and everyone's efforts, but it seems much of this discussion is at cross purposes. I feel some initial agreement on terms/definitions would help, as would some simple illustrations. Banking has always been high on my list of billiard interests, and I really would like to understand what I think is being discussed. Is there any article that I can read? Has Dr. Dave ever addressed the subject? What is the best article or chapter on the subject of banking?

The lack of clarity in the initial inquiry probably contributed to my confusion. This thread reminds me of some discussions with my wife which cause me to finally interject, "Time out. We are missing each other. Let's start over." While not an unusual state of affairs here on AZB, the subject of banking is one which demands I speak out.

Dave has done multiple -- maybe 6? -- videos on various aspects of banking. They are free on YouTube. Here is his channel:

Thank both of y'all. BBB, I broke down and bought the book. I really do not know why I had not gotten it before, but it is on the way. Bob, I thought I had watched all of DD's banking stuff, but I will take another dive. I will always remember discovering the billiards section in my college's library in the '70s. It seems like most of the books were published in the '30s, but learning about pool from books was brand new to me.

I am looking forward to getting the Beards book and am certain it will raise my game a couple of balls. Thanks again.
