Cue buying hypothetical question....

You're in the local pool hall.. a stranger, a nobody.. comes in with a cue and wants to sell it. He is not solicitating opinions, he just wants an offer and he'll probably sell to the guy with the best offer. So after you and your friends haggle with the guy, your local pool room know it all. You know the guy, every room has one, takes the guy aside and lets him know what he has. He has ZERO intention of buying the cue, but just tells the guy what he has anyways... therefore knocking your cue action...

What do you think????

JV

I would keep my cool, then break his thumbs.

Like I mentioned, it's been on ebay. Where anyone with a camera can sell something. These guys don't do the leg work, or anything associated with getting max dollar except put in on ebay. Since that is the case, let the auction run, uninterfered with and be done with it.

Again, I believe it to be one or two guys that just like to hear themselves talk. Case in point there is a Palmer up their now supposedly by someone that bought out a storage locker, low and behold, it's a model 14, Spain points, "very rare".. hey good going Sherlock, you just inflated the price for your friends here on AZ.. thanks pal.. let us know when we can return the favor!!!

Hey Billy... don't be a hero....

This is one of MANY examples over the past year or so....

Hey Billy... don't be a hero....
yeah . . . then you could have flipped it to one of "your friends here on AZ", for a tidy profit, with little to no effort expended.
that billy guy is taking unearned income right out of your pockets!
really pisses me off when people with nothing to gain, impart knowledge to the ignorant.
it's so much easier to take advantage of them, if they remain ignorant.
these hero billy types need to be terminated with extreme prejudice!

Jeff, did you miss the part where I said I don't buy from ebay? This is not a cue I have any interest in.. you know, I'll cut you slack here. This is not the first time you pretended to know how I do business, and as usual you come up short.

Besides don't compare this to your case, the ignorance here is on the seller, not the buyer.

YOU started this thread and asked for peoples opinions!
i commented on your posts, and not how you do business!
have no idea what you're referring to as "not the first time you pretended to know how I do business"!?
personally have zero interest in how you conduct business and, since we have not done any, no knowledge.
also tried to use a little humor, with the "terminate with extreme prejudice" line . . .
"my case"!? he he!
amazing statement considering you have zero firsthand knowledge.
but thank you for the nice compliment. :)

no doubt you spend more time studying cues! :thumbup2:

You're right I asked for people opinions on the situation. You went and made the remark about me wanting to buy it, and then flip it to someone on AZ, making "unearned" income.. bla bla bla... which is clearly not the case, as I said in my post. You obviously forgot some comments you made to me about running the website, cue profit, etc... But that's fine, I know how select your memory is...

JV

Sir,

I see where you...and others on this thread...are coming from. I didn't respond to your post by giving undue (or due) credit to the "know it all" or his (perhaps) over-inflated view of his breadth of knowledge. I responded, solely, on what I think is the "right" thing to do as a cue buyer AND human being.

Unlike the cue dealers/traders/flippers/etc. on here who have cue dealing as all (or part) of their monthly income, the vast majority of us on the boards are recreational cue owners, at best. From that perspective...and taking your initial scenario at face value...it sounded as though the "know it all" guy did the cue owner a great service by not letting him get cleaned out. If the owner HAD time to figure out what he had, and decided to sell at rock-bottom dollar anyway, then he gets what he deserves. If the man genuinely didn't know what he had, or for some reason didn't have the time or knowledge of where to go to figure that out...it doesn't mean he deserves to get robbed.

I'm sure most of us have been in a poolroom where somebody came in looking to sell a cue...for whatever reason. Taking the thieves out of the equation completely (I agree with manwon on handling those in a very particular way)...a guy that comes into a room to sell a cue PROBABLY has a general idea of what he's carrying. For those that don't...and just come to a poolroom to sell it...may not have all the info he needs to make an intelligent decision. In my personal opinion, his genuine lack of knowledge does not give anyone the right to take advantage of him. I guess it comes down to whether or not a buyer is looking at the deal from a purely business perspective, or from a personal one.

Good reply Mark, however I see it a little differently. If you are listing something on ebay, and you don't want to be bothered with the research part, then it is, what it is, and you get what you get. He already made that choice by listing the cue on ebay. What I see, is a guy who has ZERO interest in the purchase, spouting off and driving the price up for people I know. Now I understand coming from me, that sounds a little hypocritical, but I don't think people should get rewarded for their stupidity and laziness.

If this same person comes into the room LOOKING to aquire the knowledge and asks people what the cue is and they LIE to get the cue cheap, then yes, that to me is a problem.

Let me ask this, how many art conisseur's, would do the same thing at a garage sale, stumbling onto a painting? Or a watch collector, or whomever... But this is a little different scenario...

i continued your hypothetical . . .
you know nothing about me. :)

Well that wasn't commenting on the situation. So again, you tried to steer a thread in another direction, or decided to take a shot at me. I asked for an opinion on the situation, not an extension of a hypotheical, which had you read the posts, you wouldn't have needed to do. Because I was very clear the cue had no interest to me.. at all...

You want to stir the pot, or make an accusation, becareful some of us are willing to take the spoon and shove it up.. well you get the picture....

i get the picture that you have the completely wrong impression of my posts.
you have made three personal comments now, to my zero.
i have no interest in you what so ever.
i'm not even sure what it is you do!?
don't understand why you are taking things so personally!?
like i posted before, you and i have had no dealings when it comes to cues.
i gave you my opinion, and it had nothing to do with you personally.
any other poster could have started this thread, and i would have given the same opinion.
if you ask for others opinions, you need to accept that some are going to be different than your own, and not be so sensitive! :thumbup2:

SOme of this is shameful

I love the post about why do people have a bad view of pool.....well read this thread and you will see why. Some think that it is OK to prey on others..."use em if you can"....well, then the rep of pool is well deserved. I dont justife what the guy who imparted some knowlede on the seller did, but whats worse, being honest with a guy, or ripping him off for as much as you can. Which one is the real ass??? There is nothing wrong with striking a deal, and if the seller wants 100 and you pay 100 so be it. But dont get bent out of shape because someone was honest with the seller and told him it was worth more. Whats next, taking candy form baby and reselling it :)

rant off.....karma people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you kidding me? You cannot be that dense...

You respond to a post I made... saying "yeah . . . then you could have flipped it to one of "your friends here on AZ", for a tidy profit, with little to no effort expended. that billy guy is taking unearned income right out of your pockets!"

By doing this, you are clearly meaning me.. in case your wondering how I have come to that conclusion, let's see.. a direct response to my post, your written word using YOU and YOUR, meaning ME, since it is a response to my direct post.. Jeez Jeff, how am I supposed to take it.. it's clear to anyone reading this you mean me in your response. Don't play stupid and don't act cute.. it's unbecoming.

To your zero, my arse...

BTW an opinion, I can handle and have shown that.. but an accusation, well.. let's say be man enough to stand behind what you said.

another insult . . . :)
all my references were in general using your hypothetical . . . not personal.
