Cue & Case Gallery Forum Help...NOT

Can you imagine someone mocking a basketball player because he used
a basic Spalding instead of something inlaid with ebony that cost a few thousand?

Some of those old basic Spalding plain janes are worth quite a bit according to the 3rd Edition Blue Book of Basketballs

A friend of a friend showed me some pics of what he thought might be a Mosconi cue. They seemed pretty excited about his find. While I have played the game for many decades, cue identification is not my area of expertise. I suggested and recommended posting on AZ where I know answers can be found. I visit this site multiple times daily always seeking anything that might improve my game.

Following an initial post, a member recommended I repost in the Cue & Case Gallery. The sarcastic replies were disappointing to say the least. It reminded me of working in my last career in corrections where cons would wait in the bushes to pounce upon new meat. This burned out clique, with its thousands of combined posts and vast cue building and recognition expertise, could only suggest I use the cue for stickball, tomato stakes and firewood.

Lesson learned--my first and last post in that forum. I recently upgraded to Gold membership feeling obligated to support AZ for all of the valuable info I have gleamed over the years. I feel good about the upgrade despite this minor setback. I'm a fast learner.

Have a great day and keep the great posts coming. Got to get those tomato plants in the ground.

Look at it this way, it's very hard to nicely tell someone their perceived heirloom is a Chinese decal cue sold in Sears and K-Mart. It happens all the time. All us collectors have done things we've been similarly ridiculed for, usually on a larger and more costly scale. So after 10 years of seeing this kind of stuff, the cue guys get kind of slap happy.

Is it right? No, definitely not. But you have to realize when it's time to say "ok thanks guys, I guess this cue sucks, LOL". All in the day of an internet forum.

The other thing is, they may have been a little embarrassed because they couldn't tell you the first damn thing about your friend's cue!;)

So I did a little research for you.. http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=206782

Thanks Tate for your reply and especially for taking the time to find this link. I suspected as much, but this gives me an informed way of letting my young friend know what he has and not what he thought he might have. I'm pretty thick-skinned or I wouldn't have survived in my working career and like to think I have good sense of humor. Life can be pretty boring and negative without that. Was just hoping for a few factual professional observations mixed in with the jokes to let my young pool friend know this cue was less than special. Hope everyone who responded to my initial thread has a great day.
