Look at it this way, it's very hard to nicely tell someone their perceived heirloom is a Chinese decal cue sold in Sears and K-Mart. It happens all the time. All us collectors have done things we've been similarly ridiculed for, usually on a larger and more costly scale. So after 10 years of seeing this kind of stuff, the cue guys get kind of slap happy.
Is it right? No, definitely not. But you have to realize when it's time to say "ok thanks guys, I guess this cue sucks, LOL". All in the day of an internet forum.
The other thing is, they may have been a little embarrassed because they couldn't tell you the first damn thing about your friend's cue!
