Cue Damage Question

I have a Russ Espirutu cue and the ivory at the but cap was broken off when the cue was hit on the ground. Is the cue repairable or worth fixing?

yes, i know someone else's buttcap that broke and russ said he'd fix it for 40 dollars? i'm not sure if it was an ivory cap tho, doesnt seem like it would be at that price.

$40 would be about right for a phenolic butt cap. If it doesn't have to be ivory, a cream/off-white phenolic butt cap will do nicely. An ivory butt cap will probable cost you $150-250.

you beat me to it. don't think I am careless with my cues either. I was babying it so damn much, and this tragedy had to happen :( unfortunately, I had to learn the hard way

It is unfortunate, but I have seen it happen dozens of times while I was running the pro shop. Sneaky petes like the Meucci cues, etc with more wood near the butt were the biggest victims. I even saw one very nice custom cue split up around 3-4 inches. Had to go back for an all new butt sleeve and butt cap...expensive... People forget that a rubber bumper is there to protect the butt cap, but when you slam your cue down on it, it is much like inserting a log splitting wedge into a log and hitting it with a big sledge hammer. You will drive that rubber bumper up into the butt cap, wood, etc and something has to give...most often the butt cap or butt sleeve.

I thought I was the only one on here to have seen this happen. I never knew that the damage could have been much worse. May I ask you, how did the people crack their butt caps or butt sleeves (the times you saw it happen)? Where they trying to do the same thing as me? Or did they do it in rage?

A whole lot of people have a habit of tapping their cue's butt on the floor, especially when they miss a shot. Some of them let a little anger of missing what I am sure they thought was an easy shot or run-out get to them and they slam the cue butt on the floor. It might not happen the first time, but sooner or later, the pressure of driving that hard rubber stopper up into the butt sleeve WILL cause a split. The harder they slam it, the surer, and the more severe, the split. Same thing happens when people slam down their cues when they are using Limbsavers vibration dampeners....driving anything up onto the center of the butt sleeve can cause a split.

yea some guy did that in a tournament here once. destroyed his cue, had to switch cues in the middle of a match.

I won't say I have seen it all, but I have seen cues destroyed by:

-hitting the cue on the edge of the table, like Earl did
-swinging the cue down towards the floor, hitting the tip and shattering the cue
-slamming the butt down on the floor and splitting the cue (like on this post)
-snapping the cue over the knee
-snapping the cue behind the head/neck (this one can be accidental, too)
-throwing the cue
-putting the butt or shaft down into a pocket and snapping it off
my personal favorite:
-throwing the cue javelin style through the wall

any others out there?

Joe

wicked who did an olympic javelin throw with their cue? it would make the story better if he/she did it with a nice cue too lol.

LOLz...I've seen all those except the putting a cue in the pocket and snapping it...

I seen a guy locally here spear his cue through a suspended ceiling and it stayed up there...LOLz...I never knew if he got it back....

How's this for one...??

I saw a guy miss a shot and violently swing his cue in the air, hit nothing and the forearm split about 2 inches from the joint and shaft and the remaining piece of forearm hurtled through the air on a path of destruction only to land harmlessly by a trash can.

The player calmly walked over to the broken piece, bundled it with the other piece and dropped it into said trash bin.

Yours truly curiously walked up right behind him, fished the cue out of the trash, took note of the following words on a piece of white band (GINACUE) and took it to my car.

I had the forearm repaired, played with the cue for about a year and then sold it for about $500 in 1991.

True story.

i had this cheap cue that i used for a breaker.. about all it was really good for... broke the balls good.. one day i was walking up 4 steps in the pool hall to where the tables are and i tripped on the third step and i dropped the cue on the floor.. it landed flat, and it bounced and inch or so and when it stopped it was laying in two pieces.. it broke just below the joint.. it was wierd... it didnt fall hard either...

now i had this joss (gold letter) that i must have thrown it clear across the pool hall seven or eight times.. nothing ever happened to it except for slamming in on the floor.. crack the butt capp in several places.. but it never came apart.. the guy i sold it to had it replaced.. lol.. guy charged him 80 bux.. now the shafts for that cue was a different story.. i must have broke about 5 shafts.. i would take the cue apart and either hit them off the chair or throw them down at the floor as hard as i could..

lol.. wheever anybody broke a cue in this particular pool hall.. it was tradition to through the butt up on the roof..lol..

haha putting the cue in the pocket? thats halarious...I might pay to see that one ha

That was the technique of a high level, hot tempered player we had in the pool room. He would only shoot with Player's sneaky petes with a Moori Medium, and whenever he missed a shot he thought he should make or was having a bad night, he would get madder and madder until he would snap and jam the cue in the pocket and snap it off. Then he would come to me and buy a new cue. I ordered them by the dozen for him...all the same weight, etc...even gave him a volume discount....

Actually, Earl broke the crap out of his cue on the floor (in the Mosconi Cup).

its cool tho i wouldnt even care if i broke a cuetec. it'd be like "o no i just lost 5 dollars".

I saw a kid outside of a poolroom spazzing out for some reason. He was taking the butt of his Excalibur cue and hitting it against the ground in a fit of rage. After a few seconds of this I think his Meth Muscles kicked in and he took the butt with both hands way over his head and tried to break it over his knee baseball bat style. He swung down with his hands and up with his knee and when the 2 forces met he screamed like I've never heard before and dropped to the ground. The cue flew about 10 feet away into the parking lot. His girlfriend and someone else carried him to the car. He had a bruise above his knee the size of a football. The cue however lived to play another rack scratches and all.

LMAO...I would have loved to see that one!!

Me too ...

I would have loved to have seen that one ... LOL

When I see guys like that, or throw their cue, mistreat them in some way, it always makes me wonder how they treat people that they have a relationship with. They are usually not very confident people inside, no matter what the outside looks like.
