I have seen guys using a back of the cue extension for a shot and was wondering would you be allowed to use a mid cue extension in the same manner. That is put it on and then take it off. Never seen it done that way.

i would be so ashamed of myself for even thinking about calling someone on that, or just playing in a league populated with such pathetic players as to require such a rule, not to mention the silly abuse of it.
There is a general rule, regardless of leagues, that anytime you break down your playing cue during a match you are tacitly admitting defeat and automatically forfeiting. (I assume this is to prevent sharking by pretending to quit so your opponent relaxes only to re-assemble your cue if they miss.)
However if you need to do this and tell your opponent before hand that you are doing it to add or remove an mid-joint extension it should be fine, not-withstanding explicit rules in leagues that don't allow cues to be adjusted during a match. (E.G. Using break/Jump cues)

Yes, I was aware that breaking down your cue can be taken as a concession. I haven't seen anyone use a mid cue extension in this way, personally I also agree it shouldn't be an issue if you let your opponent know what your doing.

I have specifically removed my mid extension to jack up and masse in Singles in Vegas for APA. Ref was right there and asked a floor manager who said it was fine. The APA rule in particular is a sportsmanship situation. If you have a reason to unscrew your cue other than that you are implying the match is over, then it's no problem. For example if you are on the hill and break, it's no issue at all to unscrew your break cue and put it away if you wish.

It's just quicker to get it on and off to use a butt cue extension when needed for a long shot. Mid cue extenders are generally shorter and generally kept on for all shots. I use one as I am 6'5", but occasionally have to take it off when the CB is up against the end rail on a few of our tables that don't quite have enough room to the wall for a backstroke. I've never had anyone call me on a match concession when I do it.
