Cue extension

I recently watched a match where Johnny Archer used a cue extension rather than a bridge, I have never used a cue extension and as a 14:1 player in my youth I became comfortable using the bridge. For those of you who have tried an extension, what do you think of it? Does it work for most shots or do you still need the bridge for a lot of shots? How much practice do you need to become proficient with the extension? Where would you suggest I look to buy one to try out?

I have one around somewhere

Hi,

I have one around somewhere here. I have not used it in about
4 years since the pool hall in my town closed, and I have to
travel into a city now to play, and I don't have a case that
fits it. I believe it was called a Joe Porper or Creative
Innovations "butt extender" and folks would laugh at the
name on the package label when they saw them in the display
case. Maybe it was "extension".

Anyway, I'll dig it out and try to post some pics, and/or
put it up in the for sale forum or ebay. I have also seen
2 custom cues in my life that had a builtin device. The
butt unscrewed, and had a rod connected that allowed the
butt to be pulled out about 6-8" and rescrewed in.
The extender I referred to above worked pretty well though,
if you don't mind carrying it around. I'm pretty tall and
only used it about once or twice a month.

I like it and it doesnt take much practice at all. The only thing that I dont like about it is that I cannot fit it in my case anywere.

mine is smaller/different than the ones on ebay

I just happened to look on ebay, and there is a couple for
sale cheap, but they are 24" and I'm not sure how they
attach. The one I have is probably 10-12" and is machined
well, has 2 or 3 prongs and a threaded cap that tightens
without marring a cue. I think they sold for $49 when I
got it. It might be rare, and highly sought after for all I know!

Longoni makes a nice extension.

I tried the plastic tube type before and it peeled the leather wrap out at the edge a bit then it was removed.

I have a Tony Ryan. It is beautifully made and goes on easily with no damage to even the most expensive cues. The only problem is that it is not long enough. If you need a short one, this is a really good one. The greatest advantage of a cue extender is that when you use a bridge and an extender, you can use your normal stroke in stead of an overhand one.

I have a Longoni cue extension that I always carry with me and use once in a while. I like it a lot, except for one thing...and it has nothing to do with the extension itself. On shots waaaay down table for which I want to use it, my bridge usually happens to be at or near the point in my shaft where the pro taper begins/ends. The effect is that while stroking to hit the cue ball on an exact spot, the cue tip ends up hitting a little higher on the cue ball than intended when the thicker part of the shaft passes through or across my bridge on the hit stroke. If I'm going to hit low for draw, I usually just use a bridge. I hardly ever practice with the extension, and I should.

I have a 4" extension built into the butt of my cue. I give the butt collar a twist, pull the collar out and give another twist locking it in place. Comes in real handy when shots are just a little to far for comfort.

Here is one I made from a uniloc pin and insert a maple dowel and a broken
fiberglass fishing rod
12 inches long and fits in the bottom pocket of my case

My Jacoby has the built in one. People are always amazed when I pull it out. One guy calls my cue "the umbrella cue". I didn't know it was there when I bought it. I didn't notice when I bought it, but the points didn't line up on the bottom of the cue. I was a little pissed off, so I gave it a good twist and "OH %H@#!!" Of course, I was happy when I realized why it unscrewed.:)

minus the B/J joint;)

great pics, that is the type I saw two people with

Great pics. In an earlier post I mentioned I saw two of these
before. One was owned by a friend who I lost contact with
when Mr. Billiards in Framingham Mass. closed about 4
years ago. Bob? Are you out there? The other was used
and probably still is by Ray Mac(namara).

cue extension

Does anyone know of a cue maker or company that can put one of those built in butt extensions into an existing cue.. lets just call this existing cue a schon... any advice?

Well I have learned a bit from this thread. Thanks to all that responded. I have ordered the Tony Ryan extension that was recommended by a few of you. I already have more cues than I have fingers and toes so I will avoid going in that direction although some of those look really interesting. The Hightower system looks good too but a little more than I want right now, I may get one for my home table. Again, thanks for the input.

I have the Tony Ryan extension. It adds 13 inches to the cue length. I want more than that... another 6" at least.

Well here's what I know.

It will add 1 or 2oz to the rear of the butt. (I believe its an 1oz but I'm not positive)

So, if you want that cue to stay at x weight it has to come from somewhere, never mind the balance point etc etc.

A cue maker north of the border holds the patent on it so you have to buy the part from him (I believe its www.zaccues.com)

Mine was a new build so I could tell you if it would be a p.i.a. to do
