I was wondering if anyone here has tried or has some knowledge of using alternate types of Ivory for their ferrules? I'm thining warthog tusk, Elk Ivory's etc. Also what about horn, horn pen blanks are already turned close to diameter, that would be an easy one to try. Not sure how odd it would be to have a black ferrule though. It does take a good polish (I've used it on calls) scratch's/dulls easy unless you put a good CA finish on it though. If anyone has tried these do they have a good solid hit/feel? Thanks,

Brad

I've had an excellent experience in the past with moose antler ferrules. My all time favorite is still uncapped ivory.

I have used hippo ivory & it's the cat's meow, but super hard to cut. Antler is great so long as it's solid and free of pith.

I've used the hippo on my calls for a few years now. I just put it on one of my cues and have liked it so far (maybe 2 weeks ago) but wondered if it would crack (as hard as it is) I've dulled a few band saw blades on the enamel (sparks fly!). I hope it holds up well what I used actually has a wavy "grain" for a lack of what to term it. qbilder I'm married to a girl from your town some 30 years ago. I'm up the road from you in Murfreesboro. I'd enjoy getting together and shooting a few games sometime.

I'd like that, too. Just played for the first time at Fat Willie's last weekend. Nice tables.

And yeah, hippo is tough cutting. IMO, it's the most beautiful ivory, white with very fine grain. I haven't had any break that I can recall.

Moose tips make good ferrules. Many have use Buck Horn and other horn. If you like black then Buffalo is great.
