Cue Harmonics

Do you prefer a cue that feels dead but you can predict where the rock is going (LD) or do you prefer a cue you have to learn to control the cue ball action. Some cues just seem to really move the cue ball like crazy, what do you like? I have heard amazing things about the SS360 shaft and am curious. As a dealer of cues I am looking for the best playing cue for myself not trying to profit, I already have a real job, so if Bob Danielson makes the best LD shaft I will ask him if I can market them. Right now the Jacoby Edge is undefeated by my customers but they are always on back order. I really would like to try a Lambros Ultra Shaft but he had no reason for us to market him. THx, Tom

There are a few that don't really change the hit of the cue. My cheap Players HXT had way more feel than all but one Predator I tried, which I think was either the Z or Z2 shaft. OB has more feel than some, Mike Webb's LD shafts are amazing feel and the deflect as little as anything out there. Webb is one of those guys that may not want to deal with a reseller or getting more orders in though, he's not even making new cues really unless he knows you.

I think I have a fairly good understanding of gun barrel harmonics. The cue shaft harmonics are something I doubt I will ever really understand. I do believe it is easier for me to get my "acceptable accuracy" from a gun barrel then a cue shaft. I have used regular maple shafts and 3 LD shafts. I keep coming back to the Lake Salvage shafts Pat Diveney sells with his cues. Maybe it's in my head, but the thought of using a shaft made from wood that came from the bottom of a cold water lake after being there for many years has a cool factor for me and I seem to shoot better with it. I think the merits of the LD shafts debate will be going on long after I am gone. I also think LD shafts gave a financial boost to cue manufacturers, whether they were really needed is open to debate.

I have a Z2 Predator that feels extra nice on my Hoppe Titlist butt, I has a real sweet ring to it when hitting soft and medium shots, when I put this same shaft on my Ebony Schon it sounds and feels dead. I also have a McDermott G-core on my McDermott D19 that also has an exceptional hit/feedback but when I put this same shaft on my D11 it loses a lot of feedback. The D19 butt is Ebony, the D11 is Maple I think. Since both of the combinations include Ebony with different results I don't think it is a wood species thing, but I would be very interested to find out about these differences.

I Specify The Shafts....

On my cues I ordered from scratch, i.e., new cue build, I specify the shaft sizes, weight and taper for the cue's shafts. This way I don't mess around with LD shafts and I prefer playing with original shafts matched to the cue when the cue was originally built. If I allowed the cue-maker to build the shafts the way they normally would, well, then I settle for their specifications and not my own.......Besides, I'm the one paying the tab and also the one shooting with the cue so I know better than the cue-maker what works best for me. If I'm not sure or undecided, then I look to the cue-maker for advice but I always have the final word about how the cue and shafts are completed.

The whole question is a bit goofy. Harmonics and "deadness" have nothing to do with low squirt. And not all low squirt have "dead" harmonics. In fact, none of my Predator shaft are "dead." I think people think they are because they're confused at the the results.

Shooter08, I don't think my question is going off thread, maybe on a tangent. As a dealer do you sell or are requested more, for L/D or solid shaft? I've come to feel that with a solid shaft my straight line accuracy is better. I also like the player as breaker for familiarity.

I'm a geezer and that may have something to do with it as well. I believe the old guys like GC's and the youngsters favor Diamonds.

Viking, Pechauer, and Jacoby all make their own LD shafts and when someone orders a new "Production Cue" they typically want LD, unless they want a Schon for its known hit. Schon doesn't do LD shafts and it do not believe they ever will, they sell so many of their maple shafts that they really have no reason to add another product line. I personally prefer maple but we do get alot of requests for Jacoby Hybrid Edge shafts by themselves, and they are almost always on back order with Jacoby. I have also heard nothing but positive comments for both Vikings Vikore shaft and Pechauers Performance Plus Shaft. My business partner plays with a Schon/Jacoby Edge combo and he is done searching for something better. I personally play with a Runde with a maple shaft and micarta ferrule.
