Cue identification help.

I have never been a McDermott fan so I don't have much knowledge of them. One of my friends received this cue and was told it was from the 80's but I can't find it on the McDermott timecapsuled. Anyone have information on this cue?

That was my best guess as well by look at the pictures. Possibly a C3 as well. The butt doesn't match up perfectly but it's close.

Some of the C and D McDermotts are really nice hitting cues. I have a D11 and D19, the D19 really hits nice, much nicer to me than my D11 no matter which way I mix up the shafts. Not sure why that is.

The OP's cue is definitely a McDermott D4.

I have one like it except mine is stained a natural, almost clear finish instead of that ugly blue stain. I'll take a light or natural looking stain any day over those colors that look more like paint.

Be aware that some time in the past McDermott changed suppliers for their 3/8-10 pins. Since that change, newer McD shafts will not fit the older McD 3/8-10 butt pins.

I bought an I-2 shaft in 3/8-10 about 2008, and when I tried to put in on my 1984-era D4 butt, it would not screw down all the way even when I used an enormous amount of twist pressure. Later, I tried that same I2 shaft on a butt built in 2007, and it fit perfectly. I never tried to attach that I2 shaft to my old D4 butt again. Later, a call to Jaime at McD filled me in on the details why they don't fit.

I don't recall what years the change in 3/8-10 pins affects. I'm guessing only the really old MR(A), B, C and D series McD cues have the problem.

I would hope McD could fit a new 3/8-10 wood, G-Core, or I-Shaft to an old 3/8-10 butt pin if requested, but I don't know for sure.

Yes, McDermot can do that. I had them make a new G-core for my refinished D19
a few months ago. Getting ready 2 get another matching shaft.
