I'm not sure what's going on with the twirly looking one but that birds-eye maple one could become a player, or, as you mentioned, you could repurpose the wood.

And what was jammed into the bottom of that? Clay, someone's brains?

Yeah I figured I could convert at least the one.

Looks like a dry rotted brown bumper that broke off.
 
So looks like the Birds Eye is the JR-3.

I actually have the JR-1 which I think is rosewood. It has the signature but not the picture on the butt.

this JR-3 has neither. Did they sometimes not have them or was this worked on or worn off?

The FG-5 has a linen wrap but the original shows it normally came with a leather wrap.

Yes, JR-3 Those are really pretty. Nothing but beautiful Birdseye Maple! I have a whole line up of cues made like that. The Mali version is very nice too.
 
I enjoy picking up old cues and trying to inexpensively restore them to playable. Lots of history in those cues.
