Cue knowledge needed. Ivory butt cap?

Can anyone tell if this is an Ivory butt cap on this cue from these pictures?

Looks like simulated ivory...I have some stuff that's just like that...can't remember what it is though as I've had it forever...

If it is a Phillippi, it most likly is not an Ivory butt cap. I kinda agree if we are talking cost + replacement charges . That is absolutely one nice looking cue Kevin! I love it baby!

There have been other threads on how to test for ivory butt/s.
I am of two minds on the subject, but I would think it would add a lot of weight to the butt (if 100% ivory), so there maybe one hell of a big screw under them points to bring the balance point north again?

Easy way to find out for certain, remove the bumper, take a pin hold it with a pair of plyers heat until red on the stove of with a torch and lightly touch the material inside the butt and smell it. If it is Ivory it will smell like burnt hair.

This is good infomation. I did not know that.

I think i might try it. But if it is not ivory will the thing catch fire? Some flammable finish coating etc. Cant imagine my cue up in smokes.......

I wasn't aware that Ivorine had a grain to it. In addition I thought Ivorine was more stark white. I will look into the Ivorine material.

Someone here said if it was ivory it would weight alot more. I am pretty sure this is not true. Ivory is a bone, and every peice I have held has been quite light. I changed my cue to an ivory joint and it weight 1 ounce less afterwards. If I were you, if you know who made it, just email them with the pictures and ask if it's ivory. Quickest way to know, and that way you could ask him any other questions you have about the cue.

No it will not catch fire, what i was saying is just touch the pin to it, not to hold it there. It will smoke immediately, but if it is Ivory it will not melt and smell like plastic. Plus it will be under the bumper on the inside so it also will effect the cues value.

2 things,

1. it dosent look like ivory to me, i'd say 100% not ivory if it looks like that in real life but a pic on a monitor i cant be positive, it still looks good no matter what it is, Ivory butt caps can get a chunk knocked off them unless your real careful, speaking for myself its not an issue now but when i was starting out i would occasionally bump the butt on something time to time. Now days with alot of dings on cues i finally have it right and dont ding them anymore-thats a jinx on me now for saying that

2. Weight. Even if it is ivory there isnt much weight difference when you subtract the weight of what ever it is from what it would weigh if it is infact ivory, this is a moot point and is of no concern. your sitting good, because it is a few grams either way and un noticable thus not a concern.


my opinon, the wrap on this cue is a bit far foward for my likeing-but thats just me, the points, colors etc are great and there is no doubt you have a great cue,


oh yeah take off the bumper and with a red hot paperclip opened up so you dont burn your fingers touch the inside of the btt cap material for .5 seconds lightly, you dont want/need to melt a hole in your cue, go slow the second you see smoke move the paper clip away dont scar te inside-there is no reason to, smell it, it wont take much smoke-less than you think, even if you have to try a couple times thats the best plan so you dont mark up the inside of the but capp., if it smells like chemicals its not ivory, ivory smells terrible, and no you wont burn your cue down, just touch it lightly for .5 seconds and it will smoke enough for you to know and hardly leave a mark-inside your cue. again i doubt its ivory, enjoy your cue its nice

looking at it again it has a swirl texture and ivory has a straigh grain, even cut at a angle the grain is straight. do the test but i'm uptp 99% positive its not ivory and thats probably a good thing.
