Blud- what does your portable cue lathe cost? How long is the wait for one?

Anyone- The wood shop that I have access to has a lathe available for me to use. Is it possible to buy or make parts for this lathe to do more precise cue repair on, but at a reasonable price? I will get the actual brand/model of the lathe by Monday, maybe that will help. I just want to do general cue repair (i.e. tips, ferrules, shafts, joints, butt, rewraps and refinishing)

You need a few things that not all wood lathes have.

First, the spindle must be hollow. 1 inch inside diameter is fine if all you will work on is shafts, and 1 3/8 is needed for butts. This will allow you to pass the shaft or butt through the spindle and hold it from its end. Not all wood lathes have hollow spindles, and I doubt the one's that do will have a hole big enought for the shaft or butt to pass through.

Second, you need a chuck. Most wood lathes will have a threaded section at the end of the spindle that you can use to mount a chuck. But again, if the spindle is not hollow, the chuck will be useless for installing tips and ferrules and joints.

Wood lathes cut by resting the cutting tool on a tool rest, and guiding the tool by hand. Metal lathes have the cutting tool firmly clamped in place, and it is moved precisely by a sturdy drive system controlled by handwheels. If you don't have a system like this on your lathe, you really can't do any cue repairs.

If the above conditions aren't met, the only thing you can really do is wraps, sanding and polishing.

The best bet is to get a dedicated cue repair lathe. This will most likely come with everything you need specific to cues. The other option is to get a used metal lathe. You can find them on ebay or at your local used industrial tool distributor in the $1000 range. You can also get a new China made machine in the $2500 range. You will have to make some custom tooling for these metal lathes, depending on what type of repairs you want to get into.

Hi zimmer,

my re-pair lahte will run around $2,500.00, and for the full blown model, [build cues, ect,] will run around $4,500.00. Both of these machines will have very close tolrances.

Both machines will come with a full 1 year warrantee, a video, [to show and tell] and all the tooling nesessary to do re-pairs and build cues. This also includes the new CNC.....

I am also coming with a new CNC, parts and pocket machine very soon. [It will blow all the rest out of the water]. No price as yet. I will let you folks know when all 3 of them or ready to sell.

I have been so busy of late, I just didn't have time to finish any of them, and or show them at either the hoppkins, or BCA. Darn it....
