Cue Length

The 6'5" Shorstop on Pool has some thoughts on proper cue length for tall players:

He uses a 68" cue and has chosen to go with an 8" mid cue extension, and his cue weighs 20.14 oz.

I had a local cue maker build a cue for me that was 64" long with a 13 mm tip I still to t his day play with it when I don't have to play in a confined space it plays as well if not better than my regular sized pool cues .
It's similar to using a wood shaft on your cue then switching to carbon fiber I tried that also the jury is still out for me on that one .

Equal length butt and shaft?

There is too many taller players now and i am seeing the need for a cue longer then 58". I think taller players like this should go for the mid-cue extension. But if you need a quickie extension for a hard to reach shot i would go for the butt extension. I am seeing that a more modern approach should be a cue's length is from the floor to the players chin to mouth. I'm about 5'10" and a 58" cue is perfect for me, i use a butt extension for a quickie. I think these taller players are going to have to mess around with extensions. The weight and balance is going to be different with the added weight and length. Also Bob's page is very informative lot's of good info their

Yes 7Stud this was one of the first Sneaky Pete cues i ever seen the first one Billy made for his brother Lance who could do some amazing things with what many call a cheap Dufferin bar cue turned into a custom cue .

During league night i literally snapped the shaft at the joint I swapped it out to my extra shaft took it home then used some Elmer's wood glue on it and wrapped it with electric tape and let it set up its as good as new still to this day nearly 30 years later ha ha
Thankfully the over sized cue ball tables are a thing of the past !

I'm 6'2 with a 77" (6'5") wingspan. I play with a 60" cue, and it feels so much more comfortable and enjoyable for me than a standard length cue. The funny thing, though, is that I genuinely feel like I play better with a shorter cue - which I guess could be a function of the mental gymnastics involved in being more conscious of my stroke and fundamentals when I switch to a new cue. I'm really not sure, but I think I play pretty consistently better when I switch to one of my shorter cues.

Does your grip position change? Are the two cues similar in weight?

I'm 5 -10" 75" reach. I thought the long cue would be better. Better on long reaches but overall I still play with 58-9 cues. Might be better on a 10 foot table but I've not even seen one since I was eleven.

It comes down to how you hold the cue, right? Aside from Earl Strickland and SVB, most players are using 58" cues because they follow proper fundamentals and hold the cue correctly. Being lazy and needing 2" more to grab the buttcap for a long shot, they miss more often than the pros.

I am reasonably tall and prefer a 57"-58" cue with a wrap, and when my hand touches the buttsleeve, I know I'm getting lazy and reaching too far. Has helped my pocketing considerably.

Doesn't the 90 degree elbow angle (along with arm span and bridge position) determine where one's hand winds up on the butt? For my hand to wind up on the wrap, if my elbow is to be 90 degrees, I either need to bridge 3 inches from cue ball or really bend my left (bridging) arm. Neither of those things are proper fundamentals.

The standard 56-58 cue lengths were picked before the '90 degree elbow" became a common teaching method and when the typical male was 5'6. Look at some of the old photos of Hoppe and Mosconi and you will see their elbow is bent at address to allow them to grip the cue near the front of the wrap.

At the other end of the spectrum is a beginning player I know who is about 5'4". The helpful people in league fitted her with a 60-inch cue so she could reach more shots. Of course that was a huge mechanical problem for most shots.

I use a 57” 1 piece sometimes. There are no rules
Is it a custom one piece? If so who was the cue maker. I saw a player with a one piece in Houston years ago. He made a case with pvc with a strap attached to sling it over his shoulder. One end capped and the top end with a screw cap..

Older Dufferin. Also have an older 57” Duff conversion. I’m 6’1 with long arms.

I think the length of a cue should be determined by how tall someone is. Im 6'1" and its only natural that I would/should need a longer cue than someone 5'9" tall. When I use a 58" cue my pinky and ring finger were off of the cue behind the butt cap. If I were to use a 58" cue and grab it in the wrap area I would either need to use a very short bridge length or my rear elbow would be at an extreme angle. My cue is 60 1/2", I had a 2 1/2" mid cue extension custom made. Even though my rear hand is on the butt cap at least my fingers dont hang off of the back anymore.
