1. Keep you hands clean
2. periodically use a damp towel with warm water and wipe up and down shaft, then dry with another towel.
3. To thoroughly clean and seal properly, one needs a lathe. A deep cleaning will take out nearly all of the chalk and sealing will prevent more from getting into pores and make the cue smoother than you ever thought possible.

thats it! dry your hands with a terry cloth towel, so its barely damp, if its wet you will cause problems, and wipe down your shaft, never use sand paper, or pads etc. ALL you ever need is a almost dry terry cloth bar rag and wipe it down, dont worry sabout the color of the shaft, thats the way it is suppost to be unless its a new cue. All that stuff forsale to make your shaft better is BS, and just something to fiddle with. play pool, witp the shaft off every 15-30 minutes, keep you hands clean, and your shaft will be fine. its simple. the guys selling shaft care products will say otherwise, All I can say to them is "flip it" lets play.
I agree that, and that is why I put it first, periodically wiping the cue down with damp towel is the best place to start.
However, the sealer is not BS. Some don't care about the bluing and some do. If you really want to keep the shaft and ferrule looking new, have it cleaned and sealed. Sealing fills the pores that collect dust and almost completely eliminates bluing....
I have a feeling that your cues that stay cleaner are cheap cues that came with a clearcoating on the shafts. That coating should be sanded off & the shaft should be burnished & sealed. The clearcoating will get sticky as your hands sweat...JER
