Cue Makers that make a nice sneaky or plain jane cue..

Some of you might remember the thread about the local girl from our pool hall that was killed a few weeks back. Some of the guys have gotten together and we're going to take a collection and get Billy a pool cue. Billy since the incident seems to have buried himself into playing as a way to take his mind off the game, and though I can't believe anything possitive would've come from it I will say his game has jumped significantly.

We have some different ideas on what to get him, but ultimately we've kinda settled on either one of two..

Kim's favorite color was black, and her middle name was Rose. So we figured we'd see if anyone could make a solid black cue (Ebony) and have Kim with a small inlay of a Rose next to it somewhere either on the forearm, or behind the wrap on the butt cap. The thing I'm concerned about (if my memory is correct) is Ebony is one of the denser woods, and I'm concerned about it being way to heavy, or butt heavy at the end of the day.. (suggestions?)

The other cue would be a nice sneaky pete. I've seen Black sneaky's before (rare), or if we can't find one that's black maybe a night purple heart sneaky, and then put the name "Kim" in the joint collars.

I figure our Budget is 250 - 300 bucks or there abouts. I'd be willing to kick up a little extra if it meant the stepping up a couple knotches on the quality level.

So I present it to you AZB'ers, who would you call with that budget and those options? There's some local cue makers down here in S.D. but ultimately I'd like him to get something that really hits well becuase I have a hunch he's going to be playing with this for a very long time.

Jack Madden would work well for this. Some cuemakers will be able to keep weight down, some won't. Some will want to core the wood for that reason.

Here is a M. Stacey, Ebony SP, it's on www.INDYQ.com $275 19.4oz., real nice. You might like this one, both sets of points are sharp. You could put her name on the Hoppe ring :)

I got a Leonard Bludworth SP off ebay for a little over $200 that hits well.

Blackheart makes pretty good sneaky petes.

That is a damn nice cue at a damn nice price.

I think our Budget might be a little higher then originally anticipated. My roomate asked for people this morning what they'd donate, and the #'s came in a little higher (4 people and were already over 250'ish) That being said I think our budget might be more in the 5 - 700 range. :)

Out of this list, DZ seems to fit what I'm looking for the closest. :) Any others to be added to the list?

I'm sorry, but that metal pin with a gap in the A joint just makes me really skeptical about dz cues. That additional metal is going to add weight, which is something you want to avoid with an ebony cue.

I'm looking at the "A" joint, as a machinist, I would think that once the joint is tightened the tensile pressures would be compressed around the outside of the joint. I'm not sure what benefit you'd receive by making the entire surface flat? Other then maybe upping the surface area for Dirt to get in?

For your price range, you can give AZB's own Michael Zimmerman of Zim's Rack a try. I have a birdseye maple plain jane on order with him right now and am pretty confident it is going to turn out very nice. Communication has been quick and smooth with him and he has been more than accomodating to anything I've asked of him.

Go with a Frey Ebony or Rosewood, and you'd have enough extra to get a nice leather wrap, or an extra shaft, or ivory ferrules......or all of the above.

Not only would you have one of the best playing sneakys out there but it would also retain it's value.

Zylr's sneakies cost a lot more that $275.
The last one on Ebay sold almost double that.
He said he can go up to $700 because someone else has put in more money.:)

I think Zylr is a good choice for around $700, don't you think so?

I once bought a Satin Southwest for $800. So, you can get a lot of nice plain cues with that kind of money.

PS. O, I forgot about this totally. I came across a Sarah Rousey line of cues by Cory Barnhart last year in Vegas, and they played jam up. The plain ones were less than $700 last year. My friend bought one with a leather wrap(very well executed) and he loved that cue to death.

I am sure Sarah can tell you more about the price and things like that.
