Cue makers

Hi everyone,

Been playing pool for about 12 years but in the past year I start playing a lil bit more as I have time and money to invest in this passion of mine.

I currently own 3 playing cues : 5k1, Dyobir and a house cue butt + 314-2 which shoots pretty nice. I consider myself an average player with a lot of interest towards this sport.

Recently, the thought of having a custom cue got more and more into my head. Because for once, I'd love to have something unique and secondly, I truly believe that a custom cue will better represent me/my needs (might sound cocky but that's the truth)

I live in Toronto and it's hard to find a cue maker. I was lucky enough to come across Ron Benedict and as much as I like his work I want to keep my options open for now.

So, my questions for you AZers is what's the best cue maker out (IYO) there when it comes to price/quality ?

Thanks,

Vlad

Mike Stacey great hitting cues great person to deal with I have cue on order should have in acouple of weeks maybe selling can send pics if interested also if you dont mind alittle wait Zinzola cues alot of pics in cue gallery and on Tony's web site

There are at least 1,000 CMs (cue-makers) in this country and at least another 1,000 in process. To ask who is best for the buck my not be the question that you want to ask. What I mean is, basically what you are asking, of whoever wants to respond to this thread, is what 1st custom you should buy. Mind you, the vast majority of those who reply don't know you, have never met you and have never seen you play. Please consider, people's opinions are theirs and at the end of the day, may not be yours.

Buying a custom, particularly your first, should be a quest. The hunt for the 'right cue' is part of the experience and should you live long enough you should experience them all. Only then will you know what is right for you.

Bang for your buck

There are many choices. I would encourage you to buy a Blue Book of Cue Values 3rd edition and look through the pages. You will see many styles and if one really catches your eye, then you can ask more specific questions. When you ask for most cue for the money, 3 names immediately come to my mind:

Pete Ohman (321) 951-8123
Andy Gilbert (417) 743-2759
David Jacoby (715) 886-4449

There are many more excellent cuemakers and by all means, take your time looking and asking questions. The three listed above have each sold me multiple cues and I have felt like I got a great value every time. Each cuemaker will do custom work affordably and the wait is not very long. (Usually measured in months, not years).

Pics for your enjoyment:

Pete Ohman made the fancy break jump cue to match my Cantando playing cue

Andy Gilbert made this fancy ivory butt sleeve cue designed to my request:

Dave Jacoby made a "broken ivory" floating rectangle cue. He built a pair, one for me and one that is now for sale:

This is very informed and sound advice and should be taken seriously!

That being said I have owned several custom cues from
$400-5000 and have hit balls with hundreds more and IMHO Keith Josey makes the finest cue I've ever laid hands on. And his customer service is peerless. There are a hundred great cuemakers out there(that im sure could satisfy most anyones needs) but I have keith at the top of my short list.

Start by educating yourself and the cue blue book and the Internet can help with this. There are many things to consider. I recently bought a Jerry McWorter based on many of his cues go overseas therefore they are somewhat rare in the US not to mention he keeps his production low, next his cues are known to play well, he has ties to legendary and valuable Gina Cues, he has an innovative style (feather inlay), great craftsmanship I can go on and on. I got a decent deal on the cue If I were to sell it in the future I would make money. This is a long narrative to trying to say, in order to make a good cue purchase decision that gives you what you want in a cue and serves as a good investment you must do some research. Just like anything else that is crafted it is a matter of what fits you. If someone asked should I buy a Rolex, a Brietling or a Tag how would you answer.

Mr. Neighbors builds a solid playing cue for a reasonable price. He will keep his word on quality, specifications and delivery date.

Pat Diveney is an awesome cue maker. He is very willing to work with whatever vision you have and make it the cue you really want. His cues have an extremely solid hit and he is getting more and more well known accross the country. I would definitely give him a call @ 319-321-2012. Check out his site too www.diveneycue.com. You cannot beat the combination of price, quality of craftsmanship, and playability of his cues IMO

Vlad, while I have no problems with ANY of the cue makers listed in the other posts, I think that you should be trying to see whose cues you like before you have anyone make you a custom cue. Any number of cue makers can create a cue for you to your specifications, but they will not all hit the same. If you find one maker's cue more to your liking than any others through trying a variety of cues, then THAT should be the person to have make you a custom cue, IMO.

I would only add that it is probably better to try out different cues before settling for a specific cuemaker. This may or may not be possible where you are but the way I started was buying cues on the secondary market from people here or Ebay or other places. Normally (of course with exception) most cues found on the secondary market will be used and therefore a much cheaper alternative than purchasing new from the maker. There are many quality deals to be had here, and once you've tried a maker that really suits your needs, (example, shaft taper) you can contact directly and order what you'd really like.

Look around AZ for-sale forum, you'll find a great deal with some great sellers.

I've been playing a long time and have tried the gamut from production cue to custom cues. Have bought some for using and some for aesthetic/collector reasons. It's come down to a Whistler full splice (www.whislercues.com) which hits extremely well, and a Scruggs (timscruggs.com) which is the best balanced, sweetest cue I have ever owned. Neither is low budget but both are great cues. But as others have said, these are the cues that fit my style of play and may not be the perfect choice for you.
That being said, I play often with an older guy name Joe Money (his real name) who uses a Predator 5K8, and when he gets in gear, he demolishes me on the table. So best advice I can give you is, get your hands on all the cues you can, and when you have that 'magic' stick in your hands that 'feels' right for you, buy it, learn it, and enjoy playing with it.

I second this!
And I kid you not!

Here are some reads, buddy!
