would you ever make something you didnt like? that is if the person buying the cue wants it that way. and do you think the customer should get what they want even if it doesnt match your taste? have you ever changed the design after cue was paid for without letting customer know because you didnt like the way it looked? changing it to your satisfaction

I have made cues that I thought were ugly that were special orders. I just draw the line at anything that will compromise the function/structure of the cue. A few that I thought would be horrid color combos turned out great. As for changing the design, For the most part no. If the customer brings me the design and specs I build to them. I do however have alot of orders where the customer gives me the freedom to change things as I see fit if something does not look right too me. I still run major changes by them though.

I have my own parameters that I like to stick to when building a cue and explain my reasoning when I talk to the customer but I build all of my cues completely custom to the customers wishes. If it's something ridiculous I will refuse but for the most part, the customer is correct. That is the reason he is paying me to build him a cue. He wants something he just can't buy off the shelf elsewhere. When I give a price to build a cue I determine what the materials will cost and how many hours will be invested in building it. That's how I come up with my price. When you change my basic parameters I will charge more as I must change my set-ups. I normally use a radial pin but I will use other pins for an extra fee as it adds a couple of extra hours to building and finishing the cue. I have my standard butt taper but I will use what ever taper they want but for an extra fee as I must change and then re-setup my butt lathe.

No, I can't put myself into a build that I don't like in the first place.
The customer WILL get what he wants, just not from me.
If & when I accept a clients order, it will be built as we have agreed upon.
I won't change anything without first consulting the client.

I have built cues that I did not like the customers ideas on at all and have lived to regret it almost everytime. They wind up not liking the cue and it gets traded around over and over and everyone sees it and starts thinking you build cues that way normally.

I have built several cues that I didnt really care for! How ever I will not change the construction of my cue for anyone! I go by the theory of what I like someone else may not. And what someone else might not like I may! So as far as changing design if for some reason I think something needs to be changed I will call and discuss it with my client before I change anything on the design!

nope.... if i think it would look bad, play bad or be structurally unsound i will try to explain then pass. possibly refering to another maker if something will not work out

for us, as long as the design will not compromise the integrity of our cue construction in all its aspects, the customer will get the cue no matter the design. of course, we do make suggestions to make the design better and most of the time the customer agrees with our suggestion. but in the end, it is still the customer who will decide (for the design). that is why he came to us, right? to have a cue customized for his own preference - the true essence of a custom cue - a cue made to the liking of the customer. IMHO only.

i guess it is just diffrent makers..

thanks for posting...what i gather it is diffrent from maker to maker..some willing to make any design and some not willing to do it...the one thing that i gather from every maker is that yall are all a bunch of good guys...not one maker would do something to the cue that would risk the soundness of the cue even if the buyer wanted it that way...thanks all for answering questions honestly...mickey carroll

I spend a lot of time with potential customers describing my ideas and listening to theirs, before accepting a project cue. If I will be embarrassed to present the cue as my work I will NOT build it. No matter what profit may be involved. I will suggest another builder if necessary. Once you build a disaster it follows you forever. I take great pride in my work and want the customer's praise not complaints.
