Do C.M.s think of themselves as artists, carpenters or both.
Or is there somthing else that they consider?
I for one think the good ones are a combination of all.

Bob, a cuemaker is not a carpenter.
He is more of a model maker.
He works with parts of a very small scale compaired to a cabinet maker, house builder, of finish carpenter.
Yes, there can be quite a bit of artistry assocaited with cuemaking but I dont think very many would not consider themselves as an artist.
Cuemakers are craftsmen that make a very unique product that requires diversified skills and specific equipment to properly acomplish.
As with any other craft their products can be good, bad, and down right ugly.

I like that "ugly" part, Willee. How many cuemakers here have made a cue so ugly it sat in the corner like a poor dejected puppy for ages? I bought my first custom cue from Dennis Dieckman. It was his ugly "been sitting in the corner for ages cue". It plays nice and I like having an "ugly stick" to beat people with. :-)

I would add Machinist, and possibly computer expert to that list. The technology that exists today requires special skills and aptitudes if one decides to take advantage of it.

Good point Sheldon, I completely overlooked that aspect.
There is a lot to learn about machining just in how to care for the equipment and keep yourself safe when using it.
And like you say if you get into CNC then you are going to need to learn something about computers, controllers, drawing programs, and such.

BTW ... your avatar ... isnt it a bit early for that theme? LOL

And that's just the general technical/artistic half, wait 'til you hear the next half of the story. Ok guys, tell Mr. Roberts the business half of the story. What hats do we have to put on? :)
