Cue Material Question

I am trying to come up with a design for a new playing cue & after seeing the amazing scrimshaw work that Al Bautista has created using an ivory joint & butt cap, I was wondering if I didn't want to use ivory as part of the cue then what alternate material could I use.

In guitar making we use Mircarta in place of ivory or bone. Since it's manmade it comes in a variety of colors and hardness.
