cue position

first I believe I am a fairly accomplished player a-b level. but there are times when I feel I put a good accurate stroke on the cue ball and it just does not react the way I expected it to. usually jumping to the right or left on contact. My question is does cues have a spline that should be held in a certain postion ( top or bottom ) that gives a depenable hit.

I guess there are some people who subscribe to the theory that a shaft should be in the same position all the time. I think some {but not all} third party shaft manufacturers make that claim. I don't buy it myself, but I'm old school.
And, sorry, but if your cue ball is jumping to the right or left when it shouldn't, you ain't no B-A player. It's not the cue.

If you cue ball is jumping to the side, chances are very good you are not hitting it on the vertical center line. I have to agree with Pushout...it's probably not the cue.

That much jumping around upon contact is probably due to backhand english. Check your stroke.

Try the drill described, illustrated, and demonstrated here to make sure your stroke and cue-tip contact point are accurate. I doubt the problem is the with the cue ... it rarely is.

Break advice....I think I need a high speed camera...

oops...this was an accident. Meant to start my own post!

While there are shafts that have a dot and Bob Jewett has a mark near the tip, I have seen no evidence it makes any difference.

The fact there are many top-level players who get god-like consistency paying no attention to the orientation of their cues pretty much tells the story, imo

thanks for the responses I cant say I did'nt expect to here stroke problems, and this isnt happening on every shot but there are shots that I know I put a good straight stroke on the ball and wonder what happened. Dr. Dave thanks for the drill I do it often already. I have read alot of your stuff and respect your opinion. I guess I will keep working.
