Coaxed a friend of mine into trying pool. He fell in love with it. Wants to buy a new shooting cue and has a budget around $200. Any recommendations?

No recommendation.

Never heard of the brand Schmelke, don't know if that's how you spell it, but most people on here would recommend that.

Players, Cuetec, Schmelke, Lucasi. Just don't spend too much, they'll likely want a different cue if they stick with the game.

I've bought several of these for my grand kids to learn with. Real points and veneers, about 9 different models, excellent value in a beginners cue. (Actually, IMHO, they are well suited to all skill levels) Easy to upgrade to a better shaft later. Models are INL9 thru INL17 Here is a link. https://www.pooldawg.com/brand/action/pool-cues/action-inl12-pool-cue.
