Cue Recommendations

cubswin is right.....for that price go with a Joss.

Personally, I'd wait and get my budget upwards of $1k.......there are some steals out there on used cues.

$950 to $1200 gets you a lot of cue nowadays........$500-600 is more in line with a less fancy production cue.

U should go to local pool halls n look at they're custom cue selections most places I've been have around 3-7 customs pre owned for sale in your range. Used customs are great deals especially since u will be able to hold the cue n get a feel for it n most likely hit some balls n get a feel for the hit. Like anything shop around don't jump on the first cue go to at least 3 places that sell cues talk to the owner most likely they buy cues from customers down on their luck n u should be able to bargain and haggle I worked at 2 pool halls both places had a regular that bought n sold high end cues or the owner himself did but I'd go that route I'd think a nice 1200-1000 new custom u could get around 5-700 pre owned

You appear to be chasing your next UPS high.

Treat yourself to a nice low deflection shaft for the Schon. Invest in a set of Centenials, etc.

Get some real utility from your funds.

You won't play any better with a new cue. Personal preferences aside, I don't feel there's any other better combination for fit n' finish, nor playability than a nice Schon with a Pred. or OB hanging off the end; at least at your or my skill level.

Invest wisely in sensible, quality tools. Without much more practice, you are chasing your tail; something totally unattainable.

He is serious.
I was also serious in my reply when I said that if you know any of these cuemakers, the worst thing you can do here is to make a recommendation and risk the cuemaker being very upset at unrealistic expectations made by OP.

It will be something to do with it was supposed to be one way and he got it a different way. The shipping got messed up and his neighbor grabbed the package now he wants a new cue, or some other type of instance.

I'm wondering if the OP is serious. It seems unrealistic to think you could buy a custom cue from a reputable one man show kind of cue maker with that budget. If you desire that kind of cue maker, a Merry Widow would be about the most you could expect and more likely a Sneaky Pete in my opinion. I have a Blackcreek Sneaky and like a lot. I strongly recommend one of those. If you want more I'd think production type cues would be your only option. I'm currently having a basic 4 point traditional type cue being made and it's more than the budget stated and I feel I got a very fair price.

I have had only one instance where a cuemaker actually hosed up. And I've dealt with a lot of them. Just one instance. One only. And that one was cut and dried.

My Pechauer was in the upper end of your price range and I really enjoy it. I also am a fan of Joss for that price.

I started out with the players cues had 2 then upgraded to a falcon within the first few years of playing. Eventually I got serious about pool and figured a predator was what I needed so I found a deal on a joss with a predator shaft and used that for the first few years of my serious pool life. Again, I was also working in a poolroom at the time so I basically lived pool and after being around high end cues and really seeing some badass looking cues to me I had to break down and splurge on a custom cue. At the time and place a lot of guys were playing with Dan Dicola cues and I was able to hit with probably close to 10 diff ones and each cue had an awesome hit as far as I was concerned so I got with my buddy who deals high end cues and found a Dicola that really caught my eye. And to backtrack going from a joss w a 314-2 to a regular shaft was different n tough to get used to at first but I figured I'd just buy a predator shaft for it. After awhile. However the hit from the shafts of the Dicola are so sweet I refuse to use anything but the shafts that came with it. And also going from predator to deflection I discovered so many important aspects of squirt deflection throw etc etc that are kind of decreased I guess purposely with the predator but after I've mastered the way my Dicola cue n shafts play I honestly think having the ability to deflect is an advantage and if I'm playing my top game I don't need the aid of the predator. I say all this not to toot my horn or anything but to give an idea that for me playing with different cues has helped my overall game reach higher levels and obviously it took years of practice and dedication but for me going through the low end production to medium to high end production to predator was a process, then I came to a point where the cue wasn't going to improve my game but a sweet custom cue that I think looks great and hits great allowed me to dedicate myself to the cue n stick with it for the past 5 years and not think about buying another cue are all good things. I mean do yourself a favor, if your into pool that much, save up buy the cue u really like that just instantly catches ur eye and at the same time plays great because after buying that cue ur good for years n years n it will be a bit more money but u won't be buying new cues every 6 months ill be proud of that cue n it will become a part of u and that cue won't necessarily help ur game but the dedication to one cue for years and ultimately knowing the Ins n outs of that cue will help u reach a higher level.

Sorry for the rant lol long story short if u are looking for a player shop around find the cue u want buy it and be satisfied for many years

I recommend a used cue. If you want it in perfect condition, spend another 100 or so on refinish.

I think the worst advice here is buying a new production cue. That includes a Joss or Schon. Whatever you pay for it, it is worth about 1/2 that if you want to sell.

The price of used lower level customs is probably at all time low and you can get alot more cue for alot less than you could just a few years ago.

I wish you the best of rolls,

Ken

As some have mentioned finding a a really good custom cue maker to do something with rings, inlays, etc for 700 dollars might be unrealistic. If you would be willing to settle for a simpler cue I would look into Diveney and Lomax. Both makers have lots of great players who swear by their cues and the waiting list isn't bad at all.

I've had Pechauer and Joss cues. I'll pass on them.

Can you believe this guy?

This thread is pointless. He has no idea what he supposedly wants, and wouldn't know one if you hit him over the head with it. He seeks out the attention that these never ending threads afford him.

Nice response by the way, to a genuinely sincere suggestion above. Little wonder you attract all the crap and BS. I totally give up trying to help you.

I might have been a little quick in saying I wouldn't consider a Joss Custom. The Joss I had years ago, the handle down by the butt was a little too big/round. I'd say it was around 2mm larger than most of my other cues.

Does anyone know if Joss typically still makes their cues that way?
