Cue "restoration"...how much would this cost?

A friend of mine has a fairly old Richard Black cue that he wants to sell. It needs some TLC, however. New wrap, refinish of forearm and butt, shafts reconditioned with new tips. Now...the big question. The cue was signed by Mr. Black on the forearm. For the purposes of selling the cue, he wants to see if it can be removed. Is this something that can be accomplished with a pass on the lathe or by sanding when the forearm was had the clear coat stripped, prior to refinishing it?

I'm interested in any feedback you gentlemen have. In addition, if any of you would be willing to do the work, or have the name and contact information of someone you highly recommend for such work, I'd love to hear from you. Please let me know what you feel this would run.

The pictures below are of specific areas of the cue that need attention, from what I could see.

The work is not complicated a standard refinish and re-wrap with linen will be anywhere from $120 up depending upon the Cue Maker or Repairman who does the work.

Just Some Input From A Guy That Was A Buyer/collector Of Richards Cues For Several Years......

Do Not Have The Personalization Removed. It Helps The "originality Of A Cue" If You Just Have The Personalization Removed, And Leave The Signature, Than Anyone That Knows Richards Cues Will Know What Was Done.

I'd Have It Refinished, But Leave The Signature Portion Alone. Contact Ryan (ratcues) He Does Great Work, In A Timely Manner, And For Great Prices.

Good Luck In Whatever He Chooses To Do With It.

P.s. Any Way We Can Get Pics Of The Rest Of The Cue?

as a cue buyer I'd rather see the sig than not. It dates the cue, provides history, and doesn't look bad.

Why not have Richard Black refinish the cue? If I was to purchase a cue second hand (I like ordering custom to my specs, but if it's something one has to have), I would want the cue to only have been touched by Richard.

I agree with the others; leave the signature. You will hear collectors talk about provenance & history of the item.

BTW, Beautiful cue. Beautiful mother of pearl!

Beautiful Richard Black

Beautiful Richard Black Cue!

Not to be an Axxhat; however, after a couple of Guinesses tonight, I'm going to post my opinion.

People that will spend the bucks on a cue like this would like to see it finished by the original maker. I've seen other cuemakers on here such as Rat and several others do wonderful looking repair work; however, it is my opinion that if the cuemaker is still alive & it is considered a higher end cue that you should attempt to have him do the repair work.

Look at what Tim Scruggs says on his site, " If you have taken your cue to be repaired or other major work accomplished by another cue maker, please take your cue back to them for repair and future work. We do not work on altered Scruggs or Cochran cues." http://www.timscruggs.com/TS-Cue-Repair.htm

Good Luck with whatever you and your friend choose to do. This cue really caught my attention & that is the reason for my strong reply.

All the Best,
Joe

I've gotten a lot of feedback on this issue from my post in the gallery as well...and it seems most would rather it go untouched. However...I've also heard that Richard probably isn't the best person to go to for the repair work...I've gotten some horror stories. LOL
