im looking to buy a cuestick in the 150-300$ range for my first real cuestick. ive had my table for 6 months now and have been playing with a house dufferin stick and a cheap players cue.i dont suck that bad anymore, lol,so id like to play in the weekly tournaments close to here. should i buy a j/b cue and use that until i decide what i want, since im told i'll need one sooner or later,or should i do something else?

I have been playing with a Lucasi (I bought on eBay for $89) and I play as well with it as my 44 year old Balabushka.

It's not the cue it's the player...People need to quit worrying about so called "custom" cues, and worry about the game and learning how to make balls. Many of the best players I've seen played with factory sneaky petes...just because it says 'custom' doesn't mean it will make you shoot any better.

Just my two cents....

But none of my custom's say custom on them...lol.

I know, for me, that my game goes up linearly with the value of the cue I am playing with. When I first started playing I was playing with $10 house cues, then I went to a $50 Dufferin and I got better! Next I went to a $100 Mali and got even better, then came the $400 Huebler and, you got it, better still. Then came the $1000+ cues! I can't wait until I can afford the $5000+ cues so I can take my game to the next level!!

Those Lucasi cues hit good. My only pre-requisites for a cue these days are steel joint, thin butt, nicely tapered shaft and Moray tip (I probably spelled that wrong).

Honestly, I'm thinking of buying a plain jane Schon cue....because it meets what I like in a cue to a "T". Would you classify Schon as a "custom" cue? They're made in such high numbers...I guess I'd view them as equivalent to a Joss. The only thing I don't like about a Joss is the factory taper. I'd definitely have to have that taken down...but that's no problem for someone who knows how to do it. Shooting with a 13.5 mm shaft is like a piece of lumber in my bridge hand...way too fat. Maybe I'll save a few hundred and just buy a Lucasi...

Both the Schon and Joss (and Lucasi) play great. If the Schon fits you to a "T", you should get it over the others. There would be too much alteration to the shaft that would have to be done and the butts are thicker. A Schon butt is definitely thinner and the rest is good too.

"HEY ROSIE....CAN I GET 1 ORDER OF SCHON, PLAIN JANE...MOORI SIDE UP...WITH JUST A TWIST OF LINEN"...... Be right up sir, just as soon as I can get Rosie and her fat ass up from that cigarette break........

- You can never find good help these days. Ever since Runde left and Rosie took over it's gone to hell in a handbasket.

I've owned: Schon (several), Bludworth, Meucci's, Scruggs, Frey, Espiritu, Rick Howard/Mace Custom Cue (I was pals with Rick when I lived in Ft Walton and he virtuallly *gave* me a cue to shoot with)....and the list goes on...and I liked the Schons as well as any of them. I've owned fancy cues and I was just worried about banging em' up too much...so now, just give me a "players" cue that I can beat to hell and it will still shoot good. That is all that matters to me. I'm past having to own a "status" cue for myself, but I guess I can appreciate the guys who like to collect. Just doesn't do anything for *me* personally. Most of those custom cues are just so nice I'd be scared to shoot with them....and in the end, it seems like a waste to me not to play with them. But...to each their own.

the difference between a joss and a dz sneaky is something I can answer I think. Joss cues to me hit stiff, not a lot of give in the shaft. Think they play great and are balanced nicely.

A dz sneaky with the tip I'm using is a bit of a softer hit. Little less feedback to my hand, but still enough that I get a good feel for what I'm doing on the table. Balance is a little farther back, but that is fairly normal of sneaky style cues (at least the ones I've owned which include scruggs, joss, meucci, schon, huebler, and a couple others).

Both cues hit very nicely, play nicely, and are affordable. Don't think one is better than the other, just personal choice which is what all cues really are about. Hit is so subjective that saying one is better than the other isn't much help to anyone.

Would I get rid of my dz? No plans to at all. Have another custom on order from a different maker as well. Would I tell someone to buy a custom over a joss or a schon? No I wouldn't, think everyone should try out cues and find something they like.

I think Lucasi or Joss cues are wonderful starting cues. My nod goes to Joss because I'm more familiar with them.

I've only had one que, a $50 Crest. My game got a lot better then it was with house cues because the Crest isn't warped.

I'm curious as to why you have owned so many different ques?

Just over time I've tried a lot of different cues. No logic to it really...trying to find that "perfect" cue..and after a lot of playing and "testing" you find what suits you. For me it's no specific cue really, just elements in a cue that I like. Schons suit my likes.
