cue tip

Chandivert Brenner and Brocqut
Not to doubt you, as you are no stranger to the intricacies of cue history. However, all the boxes of early Champion cue tips I have say "Better Billiards," not Brenner and Brocqut. The later Chandivert boxes also do not say Brenner and Brocqut.

Here's a picture of the early Champion boxes, probably 70s or so. I would wonder though, if it's the same family or company, how could the quality have gone so poorly on the cue tips? There's also a lot of time difference. Early Champions and Crowns, 60s and 70s. I don't remember the Chandivert brand until about 2000 of so. Could the original guy have died, or sold the business? Not the same quality of tips at all. Just musing.

This talk of him burying them in the dirt and all.

It could be Better Billiards is the company that took over the manufacturing of the tips. I seem to remember that the BB brand goes back many decades. Something like a hundred years or more. The Brenner and Brocqut name popped up a few times when doing searches, but there is pretty much Zero information left on the web about the original company.

I have a box each of 8 of the latest tips from the 90's or early 2000s. I also have three boxes of Champion tips I have had since the 1980s. One plastic box has 1985 penned on it. Below are pictures of two of the boxes. Notice the wording around the BB on the older cardboard box. "Marque déposée" is a French term that means "registered trademark."

Yeah, I had one of those plastic box Champions. No good whatsoever, not the original Champions. I have a feeling more than one company was trying to recreate what was largely not available by the early 80s.

And to keep it Gus tip relevant, here's a picture of a couple shafts of mine that I put a LePro on a fiber base, top, and an original Crown tip with fiber base, below. I believe as the good Champion tips were getting scarce, Gus probably went to putting LePros on a fiber base. I have no doubt his son Barry did that, as I've handled a few.

All the best, for tip knowledge,
WW

I don't see any problem with the plastic box tips, but there was a box of tips with similar looking label that was made in China back then that were horrible. The plastic box says made in France on it. The other boxes actually said made in China on a little Made in China sticker.

Triump maybe? Way back I had a Triump or two come off the pad. So I started gluing on a Triump. Then cut the tip off the pad and install a Lepro on the pad.

I think you mean Triumph, right? Very decent tip, I've used a bunch of them. I've never had one separate from the pad, but I suppose it's possible. If the case, you can put whatever tip you want on that pad. By the way, it's not French, as the box says. It's made by Tweeten. At the time, they were saying it's the closest to the original French Champion tip. At the time, I would agree. Behold, the Triumph tip:
