Cue tone

What are the components of a cues tone when striking the cue ball? Is it the type of tip? Does a wrapless cue sound different than a cue with a leather wrap....I use a triangle which is a hard tip but the tone sounds dampened ....I have an ivory
Jointed cue with birdseye maple forearm....lakewood shaft...with ivory ferrule .looking for crisp tone....guess its a personal thing but like to hear that sound
...any info is appreciated

Triangles aren't that hard. PM me your address, I will send you an old Chandivert tip. That will sound crisp with an ivory ferrule.

The ivory joint softens it a bit as well, but the tip plays a big role in sound.

Never used a chandivert....are they comparable to a triangle....is it a real hard tip.....I like the action with a triangle..but not the tone..my APA team is going to las Vegas in August just trying to fine tune everything

I wouldn't be changing anything on your cue unless it is broken - That cue and tip helped get you to the dance - I'd dance with who brought you.
My 2 cents,
Gary

I wouldn't change anything. The lakewood shafts have a tendency to deadened the sound at least this has been my experience after cutting a few boards from different suppliers and making shafts. :)

Tip hardness by brand is posted in Meuller's catalogue in their tip section (for what they carry). The catalogue is available on line, but I never checked to see if their tip hardness values are posted there.
When shopping for a different tip, I look at what I have shot with as a "known" and adjust hardness values up or down depending on what I want in the new brand.
The hardness values should be average per batch, but it is a great place to start.
I believe the Durometer / Shore D hardness scale is what is used for leather.

The triangle hard is 81.4
Old Chandivert Champion i found was 74.2.
I don't have a value for the Chandivert Rocky, but it was supposed to be the hardest available a good while back. Medium hard range is typically around 76.5 to 78 or so in the catalogue.
There are several hard leather tips in their catalogue at 82 or higher.

There are also some videos on Chandivert BB hardness ratings Out there...I thought that the surfaces of the test specimens were supposed to be flat, and that isn't the case seen on one video.

I would try to use Meullers data as that is likely done on the same equipment or taken directly from the manufacturer's data per an industry standard.

F.W.i.W...I am with the other guys, keep the tip you made it to the dance with...

Best of luck in Vegas.
