Cue weight

i'm planning on getting a new cue soon and was wondering if anyone can provide any advice/insights regarding the weight.

I've heard that a heavier cue is better because it helps keep your cueing straighter and steadier. I suppose that makes logical sense.

and is there much noticeable difference between an 18oz cue and say a 21oz one anyway.

thanks.

When you're first starting out, probably a good choice is a 19 ounce, which is average these days. In a few years, 18 will probably be average. 30 years ago, 20 - 21 was usual.

A few ounces makes a huge difference to an experienced player. One you are used to an 18 ounce cue, a 21 ounce feels like swinging a hammer. One the other hand, after you adjust to a 21 ounce cue, and 18 feels hollow.

I like a lighter cue 18.5 to 19 ounce max, with the feel of neutral balance (just right) because that's the weight that allows me to feel like I'm in complete control of my stoke, the cue, and the tip. My style of play has evolved to incorporate a certain amount of tension in my stoke and my grip, where the cue movement is dominated by my muscles and the cue is stroked in a more controlled manner. There is very little looseness or play in my stroke which is probably why I prefer a ligther cue.

I would look at your normal playing conditions first...

I suspect back in the day heavier cues 20oz plus were the norm because the cloth was slower... as the tables got faster the cues got lighter for CB controle...Now with the IPT bringing back the mud cloth...I suspect the pros will be adding at least a touch of weight to thier cues...

"The Putt" in Golf is has about the closest similarity to pool...Players will change putters depending on the green...on ultra fast greens they will use a lighter putter...on thicker slow greens they will use a heavier putter....the heavier putter drives the ball on line through slow thick grass much better than a light putter....My opinion is that this can be translated from putter to cue & green to cloth

I suspect that somewhere around 19oz is the most poplular because you can adapt to faster or slower playing conditions...

Balance points play a big factor also a butt heavy 19oz cue can feel just as heavy as a forward balance 19.5oz cue......so it is really hard to say what is right for you with out knowing what other aspects of a cue you like...

I personally like a 19.1 slightly forward balance cue.....
