Cue Wobble

How is it that a butt can roll perfectly straight and a shaft can roll perfectly straight but when screwed together there is a slight shaft wobble ? Cue is from a top notch cue maker. Cue is over 3K. Although a very slight wobble but does one stay away from the cue? All feedback greatly appreciated.

Could need re-facing. Sometimes the facing of the shaft, butt or both could be not quite perfectly flat. Not hard for cuemaker to do.

I have found that the only thing that matters, is where your tip hits the cue ball.

But seriously, the shaft and butt are just pieces of wood that acclimate to various conditions. They will always move about slightly in different areas of the cue. My main player has a slight bow in the A joint, but as long as my tip hits where I'm aiming, I still can make the ball.....Most of the the time anyways.

Yeah I'm a bit paranoid of this with my cues as well. You can really tell there is a wobble if you roll it on the rail. Screw the cue together and lay the butt on the table and joint on the rail. Watch your cue tip draw circles in the air....all this really means is the joint has a problem. As mentioned already it may need a refacing or it's possible the insert is crooked. Should be an easy fix.

Try multiple shafts too, could just be facing on one shaft. I've had that happen before and just had the shaft refaced (15min job while I waited) and after that it was dead straight! But that was with a butt that was straight and rolled straight together with other shafts just not this particular one.

I've even seems shafts that start perfect when new move in this fashion so they are a tiny bit off later on even though the shaft itself still rolls dead straight. No idea how/why that happens as I wouldn't think the facing angle would change without the whole shaft moving to a noticeable degree, but I've seen it happen.

:boring2:

I cringe every time I hear the words top notch.

Those words are so loosely used on Facebook pool cue sites.

3K would be something I see on Facebook a lot too. I have no idea who comes up with some of those values.

If you have a lathe that runs true and a dial indicator, you can see if the pin is actually in the center.

You can also check the shaft insert. If any of these two things are not in the center, the shaft will roll off no matter how straight everything is. Facing the shaft and butt would not correct this even.

:sorry:
