Dear All:

Based on the "How Good Is Your Cue Ball Control" started by Dan White 2 weeks ago. We have created a drill contest for you to practice the cluster breaking skills and further this discussion.

CueTable Monthly Contest Homepage:
http://cuetable.com/contest/index.html

Here is the proposed rules we set out. Public comments and discussion regarding the rules are welcome. We will take in everyone's comments carefully and the rule will be finalized and in effect by Oct 7, 2006.

Scoring System

All balls (1 to 15) has to be pocketed. You can get additional bonus points by achieving the following listings.

Cluster Points:
If you sink a ball and break a cluster loose with the cue ball, you get 5 points. While breaking the cluster, if the cue ball touches the ball that has the same suit as the object ball sunk before, you get additional 5 points. This is to encourage people practicing finer cue ball control.

Once any cluster has been touched by any ball, it is considered "broken" and no more Cluster Points can be applied to that group. The maximum cluster point for any one shot is 10 points to encourage people dealing with only one cluster per shot. The maximum cluster points possible is 60 points.

8 Ball Points:
If you can sink all solids (or all stripes) first, the 8 ball next, and then all the stripes (or all solids), you get 20 points.

Rotation Point:
If you can shoot down 1 to 15 in a order, you get 30 points.

Bank Point:
If you make bank shots three times a roll, you get 10 points.

Misses:
You are allowed to have 5 misses as long as the shot is not a foul (scratches or no rails). After you miss, you must shoot from where the cue ball ended up from the last shot. each miss counts as -10 points towards the total score.

Example:
John shoots 1 ball, the cue ball travelled to hit 7 ball. He gets 10 points from breaking 7-15 clusters.
Next, he shoots 7 ball, the ball travelled to hit 14 ball. He gets 5 more points from breaking 6-14 cluster.
Much later, he pocketed all the solids, shot the 8 and ran out the rest, with 2 misses and 35 total cluster points during his run. His score is 35 points (20-20+35 = 35).

0609 Contest Winner:
Jeremiah G. of Albuquerque, NM and Tanner P. of Pierre, SD

"Dealing with clusters is an idea people seem to be avoiding. However, it is a critic

Dear All:

The contest itself can be hard and unusual because it is totally driven from a spontaneous talk few weeks ago. Nothing like this has been done before. One of the goals is for everybody to take a hands-on approach to exam a new concept and learn from everyone's experience. At the end, our knowledge for the topic will just get one level deeper.

While the contest promotes our software, we are pushing to enrich everyone's online learning experience, with fun and a small prize fund (Thank You, Tiger Products).

I have located the original discussions that started the basis of this contest, these are fun read:

New Rule Idea:
5 pts for running 5 balls in sequential order (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
5 pts for 8 ball untoched after running 7 balls of the same suit

These are open in the air for discussion. It may make things more interesting, or too complicated.. Do you have any suggestion in making it fun for everyone?

Thanks in advance. And, the clock is ticking, very soon we will need another contest idea for the next month. So, if you have an interesting layout... :)

Dear all:

Time fly by quickly, this is a friendly reminder that the contest will soon finish.

The layout this month indeed is a difficult one. To make it more interesting, we have done two things:

1, We doubled the prize fund for the first place winner to $200 (You may use up to $100 in each single transaction when buying goods from Tiger Product Website)

2, We lower the penalty for missing a shot so it is a bit easier now.

Want to give it a shot ?

What would be the best route for running this out?

I thought of this the other day. The path from the 4 to the 5 is a little crazy. Other than that this is pretty sweet.

I tried this drill and have my video up on youtube.com now. I will get either my friend or dad do also do the drill on camera. I can see this really helping with clusters in 8ball.
Thanks Wei!
