Current State/Cost of Salotto

So, not that many matches here in Germany get reported to Fargorate, but we DO have some players with established Fargorates, and Robustness of 400+..

I remember looking at Salotto a few years ago, and it seemed prohibitively expensive, specifically because it seemed like both players had to have paid a yearly membership, AND the per-match fee. Has that changed? Looking at some other threads, it seems there is now a free Salotto membership, and the requirement for a match is that ONE of the two players has a full membership. Is that correct?

I am currently at work, and the Salotto website is blocked, so just wondering if anyone wanted to responded about how all this currently works/cost.

Is this the current state of things?

1v1 match - one player can be a free Salotto member, one must be paid. $2.00 fee per Salotto match.

Am I missing anything? How easy is it to set up the free membership? The German players I play with are happy to play a set at any time... But they are not looking to pay some yearly fee for a rating system they care little about.

I dowloaded it here in China, but it's a pain in the ass to use here, and therefore no one who I convinced to download it uses it, and some of the match ups I've played with foreigners who have visited who use it, I don't bother to enter since the issues I had. Stopped giving a F entirely about FR.

The $3 per match is only for the free users that host a game. If you have the paid version, you can create as many games as you want per month.

I thought it was more expensive/convoluted than that..

Mostly correct, submitting to Fargo does have its own fee structure per match dependent on the race length.
As well, both players need to be registered with Fargo and have linked their Fargo account to the app before being able to join a rated Salotto match.

So for people looking to establish a Fargo rating it's convenient, but casual users are less likely to go through the extra steps (in my experience).

I’ve played 27 sets in the past year. I don’t have a membership. I don’t see any advantage to it.

I pay by the set. Whoever initiates the set pays. I usually alternate with the opponent who pays.

It costs 2.99 USD for a race to 10. Inside the app it says “up to 10 games” but it really means “up to a race to 10”.

Race to 10 is the best bang for the buck.

Make sure you flip the switch that says submit results to FargoRate. If you don’t, you’ll still pay (less), but no submission.

Solatto also has their own in-house leaderboard. I legitimately tried to figure out what it was, and was at a complete loss. I just ignore that entirely. I think the membership has some benefit for that.

No, incorrect.

Both players need a Salotto and FargoRate account. Free tier on both is fine.

Whoever initiates the set in the Salotto app pays within the app. Opponent has no charge.

When I play players that are into FargoRate, they are usually happy to use it and we alternate who pays for multiple sets.

When I play players who don’t really care and it’s pulling their leg to use it, I just keep my mouth shut and pay for all sets.

Russ, based on what I remember when we played a couple sets 10 years ago, you were a ball or two better than me. (Or playing way over your head when we played). I’m a 572. I’d put you at a 610.

You may want to consider keeping your rating as is and enter the quarterly Birmingham split bracket tournament on your next stateside trip

Also highly recommend paying the membership for FargoRate (not Salotto). That’s the only way to see your match history. If you’re into Fargo, you’ll want to have that info.

Another thing I’d recommend is becoming a TD using digital pool that submits to FargoRate and hosting small weekly handicapped (or open if your area supports it) events. I’ve just hosted my 3rd tournament and it is a good experience. I play in my events. There is no charge for digitalpool or FargoRate using this method. Must be a tournament of course, not one on one.

Digital pool (somewhat) restricts what free accounts can do now. If you have more than 32 players, you're going to need to pay them.

I think they stopped adding stats to your activity page as a free user, too. You might have to pay them to be a "Verified Player" now.

To win that event you need a good rating and to play over your head. It’s worth going, imo, if you can work it into your vacation.
