Cushion & Pocket Size Questions

Just had a Gold Crown I recovered with Simonis 860. Mechanic was to convert table to a 'tight pocket' table with 4 1/2" pockets. He replaced the original 'Super Speed' cushions with something pink and the finished corner pockets came out 4" measured from inside pocket's outside 1/8" radius. He stated that he'd just set up a room of new GC 4's and replaced all the new SS cushions because they were "cheap junk" with his pink things. He said there was nothing wrong with old SS cushions, but the new junk ones are coming from China. He also stated that GC I slate is superior to the new GC 4 because the new stuff is "softer" than the old slate.

The method used was to fit two shims, the cushion, and then the final thin facing.

Got a few questions for anyone in the know here. First, who makes these pink cushions and are they truly superior to Super Speeds? Second, is 4" going too far? I can still make all the shots, but ya gotta be perfect. No margin of error at all. Seems to be a good practice table, but wonder about friends being able to play the table.

I wouldn't recommend 4" pockets. It changes the game, you will improve your shoot making but Its going to be hard playing shape if your always shooting for the center of the pocket. About your cushions I have respect for the Brunswick cushion. You should probably get more feedback from machanics they have more experience tighting pockets. I do more home tables and pocket tighting is rare.

@ the poolhall I play at all the gc4 are 4" in the front and at the back of the pocket, once your used to it its nice. Not sure what size the side pockets are but there tight there are alot of angles you cant make a ball from into the side pocket. They use artimes rubber at the pool hall.

My table at home is 4" in front and 3-7/8" in the back with ss rubber and my old gold crown 1 I put championship tournament rubber on it sold it 2 years later and the owner still loves it. made room for the gc4 and now i'm going to install 5x10 anniversary at the shop with all the rails for 3 cushion, snooker and standard pockets as well then i will figure out how tight I should make the pockets.

If you make your pockets around 3-3/4 or smaller its to hard to run balls down the rail and make them, not enough facing for the ball to fall natural into the pocket. I've been told even harder to string racks in straight pool when the pockets are that small and smaller.
