custom cue weight

I know that I can't order a custom cue and ask for a specific weight since it would be hard for the cuemaker to make a cue that weighs exactly what the customer wanted, except probably if he uses weight bolts. How much usually should the range for the weight be asked from a cue maker? .5 oz? (eg. 19-19.5 oz). I'm asking this since the cue I got from a cuemaker seems to be way off the weight I requested.

From my experience, 19-19.5 is the standard weight and 99% of the custom cue makers can get you what you want. Each of my cues have come with in .20oz of what I wanted, some are 19.25, 19.0, 19.38 and 19.5. Depends on the cue design IMO.

Miko, a good custom cuemaker can get your cue properly balanced and within 1 to 2 tenths of an oz. for the weight.

I do not add weight "via", the way of "weight" blots. Using them, will through off the balance point of the cue, being too front, or too back heavy, making it not properly balanced for the best playability. To me this is not custom cuemaking, using weight bolts.
If a cuemaker or seller says he can change the weight bolt to get "your weight", the cue will not play as it should, because of the balance being changed.

I go so far as weighing each shaft to make sure that the cue with either shaft, is the customers perfered weight.
At times when a customer wants two shafts and one at 13mm, and the other smaller, I still can make the final cue weight what you want with either shaft.

also the cue weight fluctuates anyway. i don't know miko, but all my cues are pretty much on the nuts. you can ask for anything you want.
i'd say you can get almost exactly whant you want if your cuemaker has experience. he knows his woods and their densities. and they all have their little tricks to pretest the weight and balance before assembly.

you might have a cue that is oddly balanced from what you're used to, so it might FEEL different. if you want an unbiased sense of the cue weight, hold it vertically by the tip so that the balance doesn't fool you.

Thanks for the replies. I recently received my custom cue for the 2nd time after the first cue he sent me got some problems that required him to make me a new cue. And now the weight ot the 2nd cue is off by at least .66 oz from what i asked. He is now asking me to just drill a hole in the butt and glue in the extra weight to achieve the weight I want. According to him this would only move the balance point by 1/4 of an inch.

Question to BLUD

Okay so a customer orders a 19 oz cue, you weigh in the parts and wala 19 oz... but do you include the Finish of the cue as a factor in the weight of the butt ?

How thick should the finish be ?

how many oz does it add to the weight of the cue or this is negligible ?

When your spraying the finish, how do you know when its just Right ?

Qguy....Would understand if I dont get any response from Blud....

.25" change in balance might not sound like a lot, but you'll be surprised at how sensitive you are to it. if you're picky about leaving the balance point as is,,,he can maintain the balance point by adding weight in the butt AND adding a bigger pin at the joint.

Absolutely. My second custom cue weighed a 10th of an ounce more than my first custom cue, but the first one felt much heavier because of the way it was balanced.

I agree with what you said. My current cue has a balance of around 2-3" above the handle and I'm used to a little more butt heavy cue. I can probably live with the balance being moved by .25". However, what I am concerned about is the cuemaker is asking me to drill the hole in the butt to add the weight. I'll probably just have to find a good cuemaker near me to do this for me. Thanks for your inputs.

I had Dave Kersenbrock make a cue for me back in 1977 and the butt with one shaft weighs 19.22 oz and the butt with the other shaft weighs 19.25 oz !! NOt BAd ! I wanted a cue with a weight of approx. 19.25 oz...

miko,

I'm surprised that the cuemaker wasn't able to meet your specs according to the weight you wanted... since i also have a cue from the same cuemaker. In my cue, he had no problems meeting my specs.

Drilling the butt end? Can be done...but, why bother? Putting a weight bolt in... I guess I just dont like the idea of weight bolts.

I was also very surprised with the problems I have encountered. I wasn't expecting these problems especially since I feel that what I paid wasn't a bargain. I'll try if I would be able to make it reach the weight of at least 18.75 oz. I guess I just have to bring it to our cuemaker when I go for my vacation next time. :)
